Today on Transmusic Airwaves we have music selections from John Wasylko and Jim Aman.  John was a host of WKSU FM’s Fresh Air program.  Jim Aman was a college roommate of Paul’s and along with Paul, a member of Kent State University’s All Campus Programming Board.  As such, Jim was responsible for bringing a lot of live music from some great musicians to Kent State.  Through Paul’s infectious needling, WKSU enjoyed co-sponsorship with the ACPB of concerts by Peter Hammill, Brand X, Gong, Francisco’s Cosmic Beam Experience, and many many more.  In the photo above, Paul Ciminero, Tom Simpson and Jim Aman.  Tom was also a key ACPB member, and continues to bring great live music to Kent Ohio, running The Kent Stage.

Welcome to another edition of Transmusic Airwaves…unconventional Free-form programming.  On this episode we will feature all the music that Paul Ciminero had set aside for his Best Of 2022 Transmusic podcast.  As a regular listener of this program, you already know Paul passed away, literally while working on his year-end program, his 496th to date.  Not a bad way to go, working on your life’s passion and sharing that interest with others!

Anyway, Paul was in the process of assembling a folder of tracks for show #496.  Amazingly, he had also created folders for show #497 which had 6 tracks and a folder for show #501 which contained 1 track.  Plan ahead much?  Paul was clearly not finished collecting the tracks for his Best Of 2022.

This collection of Transmusic Airwaves sets provides an arrangement of a particular echo in its founder, Paul Ciminero. Whether this is one small step for man, or one giant leap for mankind is left to your interstellar imagination!

These sets originate from six different shows and have been stitched together with each set positioned where it occurred originally. The resulting patchwork sounds cohesive, as though it was always meant to be this way.

Each set boasts a unique slice of the cosmos, with the astronomical insights you’d expect from a salty cosmic mariner.

Paul Ciminero grew up in Niles, OH, graduated from Kent State University (where he also contributed as a DJ on WKSU’s late night Fresh Air program in the late 1970's), retired from Merryvale Vineyards, and enjoyed his retirement re-visiting his radio roots and love of music via his weekly unconventional free-form music podcast “Transmusic Airwaves” where he loved the challenge of assembling music from many different genres into a cohesive flow and musical journey. 

Assembled from various Transmusic Airwaves shows, this tribute to Paul includes a few surprises in honor of his personality, charm, sense of humor, and quirkiness. The opening and closing sets are largely unedited. Everything between was stitched together for this tribute.

On today's episode I must admit it was a rough ride getting here.  Tragically, I was notified that my longtime friend, Paul Ciminero passed away suddenly while working on the new year's Podomatic broadcast.  My name is Jeff Wootton, guest hosting this 2 hour tribute of sorts to Paul.  I first met Paul in the spring of 1976 when he came to WKSU to work as a student to host Fresh Air, our free-form progressive format at the time.  Paul was a music nut, as we all were and while worked at the station we were in a constant search of new and interesting music to offer our listeners.  As programmers, we delved into the other music styles and indeed, hosted many Jazz, and Folk programs.  As a Fresh Air host, the DJ had full reign of what music to play and how to present it to our listeners.  Paul took those early experiences to heart and when the opportunity arose, created Transmusic Airwaves.  No one can replace Paul...he was one of a kind!  But his sensibility to the variety and flow of the music is in all of us here at Transmusic.  We have rebranded it a "Collaborative" hoping to attract other like-minded programmers to continue the Transmusic legacy which Paul started.  It is with this in mind, we offer first, a few tribute programs to Paul.

 On this years TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #495) it’s my 11th annual Christmas Special and I’ll begin and end the program with two songs from ANDY PARTRIDGE’S (of XTC) latest EP ‘My Failed Christmas Career (Volume 1). 

 In between those songs is my unique ‘take’ on holiday music which means you’ll hear RALPH CARNEY’S Happy Solstice’ song, become immersed in the storytelling of DAVID SEDARIS (his tale as a Macy’s elf), become surrounded by the quirky Klezmer sounds of Hanukkah, and hear this year’s pick of THE BEATLES Fan Club Christmas message (1966 in honor of Revolver’s new deluxe set).

 Locally, I’ve got songs from THE WAITRESSES (‘Christmas Wrapping’ of course), THE HI-FI’S, GLENN LAZEAR, and GOLEMS OF THE RED PLANET which fit comfortably into the Christmas stockings over the fireplace, plus songs about this weeks excesses like food (NITTY GRITTY DIRT BAND, ALBERT COLLINS), the weather (R.
