  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #305) - February 1, 2019 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
On TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #305) this week there are a couple of sets with specific underlying themes to them ranging from space and planets to songs loosely based on current events and others with songs which just sound great together.

There's CRACKER with 'I'm A Little Rocket Ship', MANFRED MANN'S EARTH BAND performing 'Saturn Lord of The Ring/Mercury, The Winged Messenger', SUFJAN STEVENS & FRIENDS with the song 'Saturn' from the 'Planetarium' LP, and DJ KOZE from his latest release doing 'Seeing Aliens' all during the second set. (planet and space themes)

Later RANDY NEWMAN'S 'Mr. President (Have Pity On The Working Man)' is mixed in with TOM MORELLO'S 'One Nation' from his new album,'The Atlas Underground,' then a little later THE DECEMBERISTS song 'I Will Not Say Your Name' is placed next to PETER BLEGVAD'S 'King of Straw' and DEERHOOF'S 'Criminals of the Dream' in sets that emphasize current events.

Also heard today THE VELVET UNDERGROUND & NICO'S 'All Tomorrow's Parties,' THE STRANGELOVE'S 'I Want Candy,’ and PINK FLOYD'S 'Corporal Clegg' all from the 'vault,' and new material from trumpeter AMBROSE AKINMUSIRE, contemporary composer GEORGE CRUMB, and another Nordic melody from MARI KALKUN.

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #304) - January 25, 2019 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
I've always believed that the first set of each program that I create every week for TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES ultimately will determine the shows overall success. Setting the tone this week during Episode #304 is the song 'Tripping Along' from THE DECEMBERISTS newest release, 'Traveling On.' Following it you'll hear from THE BYRDS ('Space Odyssey'), GIBBY HAYNES, HECTOR ZAZOU (with John Cale & Susanne Vega), PORK TORNADO, and two more NEW selections from CAT POWER and BRYAN FERRY & HIS ORCHESTRA.

The second set begins with PARQUET COURTS covering 'These Boots Are Made For Walkin' then morphs into several songs about snow by TOMITA ('Snowflakes Are Dancing'), TIN HUEY ('Ice 9 Hop'), and songs from BEAVER & KRAUSE and RICHARD THOMPSON before drifting off to other subjects with PHILLIP GLASS, DJ KOZE, ESQUIVEL, and SILVER APPLES.

There's plenty more to offer including 'vault' picks from VAN DYKE PARKS, THE BONZO DOG BAND, DONOVAN, and CAN, jazz from RETURN TO FOREVER, world music from THE KHAC CHI ENSEMBLE, and more new finds from MARI KALKUN, NENEH CHERRY, and JON HOPKINS. Tune in. You won't be disappointed.

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #303) - January 18, 2019 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
The forecast calls for heavy snow this week so I've planned another great edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #303) that you can cozy up to while all the chaos outside your door ensues. I've decided avoid the usual winter songs and instead just serve up another three hours worth of great selections, both new and old.

HERB ALBERT and THE BRYAN FERRY ORCHESTRA go back to back during the first set with songs from their latest efforts blended together with 'vault' offerings from NEGATIVLAND, THE MOTHERS OF INVENTION, HARMONIA, and MORT GARSON'S 'Wozard of Id' album.

Later I'll combine a new song from JEFF TWEEDY with a classic from DAVID BOWIE'S 'Ziggy Stardust' then add a wrinkle to it all with another NEW remaster; a segment from the landmark HOLGAR CZUKAY & DAVID SYLVIAN 'Flux & Mutability' release. That's followed by DIANE ARKENSTONE and PINK MARTINI'S latest efforts while DON CHERRY'S 'Brown Rice' sits between both of them.

More NEW material is heard from CAT POWER, DJ KOZE, and the Icelandic ambient textures of OLAFUR ARNALDS, and more 'vault' treasures are played from AMAZING BLONDEL, ALICE COOPER, and HATFIELD AND THE NORTH. RALPH CARNEY cozy's up next to the JEFFERSON AIRPLANE and IVOR CUTLER does the same with THE BEATLES. If you've enjoyed these descriptions, then you'll really like all the musical metaphor's I've planned today.

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #302) - January 11, 2019 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
It's going to get interesting on this installment of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #302) as I came across two great 'remastered' albums that I've coveted for many years; CURVED AIR'S 'Air Cut' and KEVIN AYER'S 'Whatevershe bringswesing.' Add to that VAN DER GRAAF GENERATOR'S 'Refugees,' SKY CRIES MARY 'covering' PINK FLOYD'S 'Wots...uh The Deal,' and several songs from THE MUFFINS, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, BRIAN ENO and SHADOWFAX and you've got a great base to build a show around.

NEW cuts from MARI KALKUN, PETER BLEGVAD, JEFF TWEEDY, DIANE ARKENSTONE, and DIRTY PROJECTORS get assembled into sets with jazz from OREGON, MOSE ALLISON, and DAVE PIKE as well as country/folk from STURGILL SIMPSON, the ageless MOR of THE FREE DESIGN, bluegrass vocal tinkering from JOHN HARTFORD, and another gem by the always excellent XTC .

In addition to all this there's a virtual local talent songfest from 15-60-75 (THE NUMBERS BAND), BEYONDERERS, UNIT 5, DAVID THOMAS & THE PEDESTRIANS, and a stellar cut from ALLEN RAVENSTINE. 'When does this all start?' you ask, well right NOW!

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #301) - January 4, 2019 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
This week it's time to welcome in the beginning of another year and I'll do so with the 301st episode of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES. The program contains a large collection of NEW selections ranging from ambient (BRIAN ENO and ALLEN RAVENSTINE) to international (MARI KALKUN and the TOKYO SKA PARADISE ORCHESTRA), progressive (PETER BLEGVAD and DEAD CAN DANCE) to slightly more mainstream (PINK MARTINI and JEFF TWEEDY) with electronica (JON HOPKINS) and folk (DIRTY PROJECTORS and DARLINGSIDE) all mixed in.

I've also grabbed songs by TOM WAITS, LEON RUSSELL, KEN NORDINE, and MOTHER GONG, along with a excerpt from STEVE REICH'S 'Music For Large Ensemble' and added those together with recent pieces by CHARLES LLOYD & THE MARVELS, WOODEN SHJIPS, PALBERTA and a couple of cuts from the 50th Anniversary editions from THE BEATLES (White Album) and THE ROLLING STONES (Beggar's Banquet). I'll finish it all off with HARVEY GOLD'S song 'Eidola,' honoring musician RALPH CARNEY'S legacy.

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #300) - The Best of 2018 - December 28, 2018 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
This week I've achieved another milestone as TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES airs Episode #300 and I'll mark the occasion with my annual 'Best of ' program (2018) where you'll hear my favorite musical picks from the past year.

There's plenty of music from local Northern Ohio artists including cuts from CHRIS BUTLER & RALPH CARNEY'S 'Songs For Unsung Holidays,' THE BIZZAROS & BAD DUDES 'From Akron II,' plus OBNOX, ALLEN RAVENSTINE, EXTRA SPOOKY, GLENN LAZEAR, and CHRIS BUTLER'S solo album, 'Got it Togehter.'

You'll also hear the newest efforts by SOFT MACHINE, MARTY STUART & HIS FABULOUS SUPERLATIVES (both whom I saw perform 'live' this year), DEVOTCHKA, ARTHUR BUCK, DEAD CAN DANCE, CHROME, JON HASSELL, BRIAN ENO, and THE RESIDENTS. There's international sounds from OUMOU SANGARE, NIKLAS PASCHBURG, and SHANREN, soundtracks from THOM YORKE and ALEXANDRE DESPLAT, folk styling's from JOHN PRINE and IRON & WINE, a classic jazz reissue from MILES DAVIS, and plenty of late year arrivals from the likes of PETER BLEGVAD, NENEH CHERRY, and JEFF TWEEDY. It all kicks off with another unreleased gem by JOE STRUMMER and finishes with RICHARD THOMPSON and YO LA TENGO. It's uncanny how the timing worked out this year don't you think?

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #299) - The 7th Annual Christmas Special - December 21, 2018 - with Paul Ciminero (host)

Well it's that time of year again. The smell of pine permeates the house (and this time it's not in spray form from the second bathroom where your uncle has been holed up for hours), cookies are baking in the oven, and guests are arriving. It's Christmas week with all the mayhem you've come to expect and I've got just the thing to make your life a little less chaotic. Here's this year's TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #299),the 7th Annual Christmas Special, with three hours of great music to relax everyone at home.

Today I'll be serving up THE BEATLES 'White Album' 50th anniversary release in a white Christmas 'mash up' with various carols, The Beatles 1968 Christmas Fan Message, and a host of other surprises during the third set.

And that's not even the main course! I've got CHRIS BUTLER'S holiday mainstay, 'Christmas Wrapping,' served three ways this year; as THE WAITRESSES traditional cut, with a side lullaby by MIKE BAIARDI, and as an ALBERT AYLER inspired dessert ala MARS WILLIAMS. Grab your favorite beverage because there's other Christmas music from JORMA KAUKONEN, THE VENTURES, THE CHRISTMAS JUG BAND, RODNEY CROWELL, DANNY ELFMAN, OVER THE RHINE, SUFJAN STEVENS, and believe it or not, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART plus plenty of jazz with JIMMY SMITH, DUKE ELLINGTON, and ESQUIVEL too. • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #298) - December 14, 2018 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
It's time for another weekly edition of TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES. This week it's Episode #298 and on it you'll hear everything from a psychedelic offering by THE PEANUT BUTTER CONSPIRACY to a jazz standard by LOUIS PRIMA, an a capella version of the TALKING HEAD'S 'Once In A Lifetime' by Senegal's WASIS DIOP, and 'Cha Cha' versions of 'The Magnificent Seven' by TITO RODRIGUEZ and the Stone's 'Satisfaction' by BRAVE COMBO.

I'll remember the passing of Pete Shelley with a song by his band THE BUZZCOCK'S and also honor the memory of Ralph Carney with a cut from the CHRIS BUTLER & RALPH CARNEY release, 'Songs For Unsung Holidays.' There's ROBERT WYATT singing a cut from the 'Winged Migration ' soundtrack, JOHN G. PERRY, PASSPORT, JOHN FAHEY, and PINK FLOYD'S 'Let There Be More Light' all from the 'vault,' and more NEW selections from PETER BLEGVAD, ALLEN RAVENSTINE, SUFJAN STEVENS, DEAD CAN DANCE, THOM YORKE, and YOKO ONO.

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #297) - December 7, 2018 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
They say the hardest part is 'getting started' and surely that was the case while trying to assemble this weeks TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #297). I spent countless hours fidgeting over the first set before it fell into place and four days on, had barely finished the first hour. Then suddenly, like the fog and clouds surrounding Northern Ohio this time of year, it all disappeared and the ensuing clarity allowed me to finish the chore at hand. I believe you'll like the results too!

More NEW selections are heard from THE BEATLES ( the White Album Esher Demos), RICHARD THOMPSON, DEAD CAN DANCE, BRIAN ENO, NENEH CHERRY, and also added this week are two new finds by PETER BLEGVAD and SUFJAN STEVENS. From the 'vault' you'll hear vintage DEVO, HATFIELD & THE NORTH, CAPTAIN BEEFHEART, SYD BARRETT, and STEVE HACKETT. There's music from international artists D'GARY, VARTTINA, and RADIO TARIFA, jazz from HAL WILNER'S 'Mingus – Weird Nightmare' album and AL DIMEOLA, and acoustic stylings from SPECK MOUNTAIN and DAVID CROSBY.

Add to all that a number of 'covers' including BILL FRISELL covering The Beatles and CAMPER VAN BEETHOVEN interpreting Pink Floyd's 'Interstellar Overdrive.' WENDY CARLOS and THE FLYING LIZARDS both covering Burt Bacarach's “What's New Pussycat,' and the KRONOS QUARTET literally does 'the Funky Chicken' for string quartet.

  • Transmusic Airwaves (Episode #296) - November 30, 2018 - with Paul Ciminero (host)
I gather ideas from many sources when picking the music for each weeks radio program and this week the inspiration for the latest TRANSMUSIC AIRWAVES (Episode #296) came from a series of compilation albums with various themes and artists. I decided to 'cover' the Rolling Stones song '2000 Light Years from Home' as interpreted by the band SKY CRIES MARY when I came across an album of Stones songs covered by instrumental 'surf' bands and the same piece done by JIMMY CREASEY. Voila! A Match!

From the 'Putumayo Records Presents' series I added two separate pieces; a cut from 'A Jewish Celebration' by the band GOLEM called 'School of Dance' and from Putumayo's Paris compilation I added PRESQUE OUI'S 'L'Ongle.' Other nuggets were gathered from the 'Nightmare Before Christmas' bonus disc, 'Nightmare Revisited' and a Mojo Magazine psychedelic disc titled 'Beyond Saturn – 15 Mind Blowing Cosmic Tracks.

Add to those items, more NEW songs from the BOB JAMES TRIO, DEAD CAN DANCE, ROSANNE CASH, and more selections from OBNOX, RICHARD THOMPSON, BRIAN ENO, and NENEH CHERRY. Out of the 'vault' there's music from THE NEUTRONS, SYNERGY, STEELEYE SPAN, CALLIOPE (playing 'California Dreaming'), SPIRIT (doing 'Star Trek Dreaming'), FRANK ZAPPA, and RENALDO & THE LOAF. Ain't inspiration wonderful?
