Editorial Note: While Nikki refers to the truck in this video as having been totaled, there's been an 11th hour change: Ortegas will in fact live! - Video incoming next week.
The weather has been a mix of warm and blustery this week, but Nikki has had a surprise visitor this week in the garden that's taken a shining to one of her apple trees...
Stay safe, stay engaged. If you can, please take a few hours to watch our livestream from earlier this year. It shares some things that we can all do to resist peacefully, smartly, and keep ourselves and our loved ones safe.https://youtube.com/live/OxKt_APYQug

In February, a minor rear-end collision on our way to film at Aptera left Nikki's personal (and therefore Transport Evolved's) 2023 Ford F-150 Lightning β Ortegas β with a small hairline crack in the rear bumper bracket. The truck drove fine, and while we sustained some soft tissue damage (mainly whiplash) we were able to drive Ortegas back to Oregon.
When we got back, we took Ortegas to a local repair place attached to our local Ford dealership. They spent 60 seconds under the truck and claimed it was fine.
Three months later, we discovered a crack just where we'd been told by cops at the scene they thought might be a hairline fracture. It had got larger.
We went to a different local repair shop (recommended by another local Ford dealership) and Nikki's insurance company approved the repair. Now, one month later, the shop says the part doesn't fit and they can't find a part that does β while simultaneously stating there's no official repair procedure for this repair on the Lightning. And our insurance company? They want to write the truck off, leaving us with loan payments and a fight over what is otherwise a perfectly functional truck.
Worse still, salvage rules in Oregon would mandate a salvage title if we were to buy the truck back β meaning we'd lose all warranty coverage on a truck with only 22,000 miles on it. For the reduced retail value and the risk of losing every warranty, we're simply not comfortable with that.
So today, Nikki shares the full story β from the accident to the insurance battle β and asks for your help. If you know anything about F-150 Lightning repair procedures, parts sourcing, or Oregon insurance law, please leave it in the comments below. And no, just getting someone to weld the bracket up is no longer an option the insurance company will accept.

While Nikki's plants are growing and the weather continues to warm, Nikki is starting to feel the very frustrating absence of her Ford F150 Lightning - which has been at the repair shop now for nearly 1 month. Why? She needs more soil for her potatoes!

Just a day after we gave you our breakdown on the difference between the money that some politicians said couldn't possibly be spent on Biden-era, already-apportioned funds for cleaner, greener transportation and energy, while at the same time calling for more than $1.5 trillion in funds to be sent to Department of War for the current conflict in Iran, we heard about a new bill submitted to the U.S. House of Representatives that will further impact EV fans across the U.S.
Enter the 1005+ page BUILD America 250 act. Introduced last week and due to be marked up by the end of this, it proposes massive changes to existing provisions for cleaner transportation. Covering the next 5 years, it would also impose new taxes on EV and plug-in hybrid owners, ensure no further NEVI funding is provided, and make it harder for disadvantaged communities and at-risk areas from making smarter choices about their infrastructure.
So today, Nikki is joined by Ben Prochazka, Executive Director of the Electrification Coalition, to break down what's actually in it and what you can do about it.

For years, politicians β mostly on the conservative side of the political spectrum β have railed against EVs, calling them everything from "handouts for the rich" to outright scams. Under President Donald Trump, Republican lawmakers successfully repealed the majority of policies encouraging Americans to switch to electric vehicles, along with investments in renewable energy and improved air quality. Too expensive, they said. Too much of a burden on the taxpayer.
And yet.
The U.S. is now waging an as-yet-unsanctioned war in Iran alongside Israel β one that has already cost taxpayers billions of dollars, sent fuel prices surging 50% at the pump, and pushed inflation to its highest point in years. Meanwhile, the fossil fuel industry is posting record profits on the back of the very conflict causing that pain.
So today, we're asking the uncomfortable questions: just how much will this war cost? How does that compare to the cancelled incentives and programs that would have helped β not hindered β lifespans, air quality, and energy security? And who, exactly, is benefiting from all of this?
We have receipts. And some cold, hard facts. And we are not here to condone anyone's actions β just to follow the money.

In some countries β okay, mostly the US β automakers are looking less and less interested in selling and maintaining EVs. And their dealerships? They're more interested in selling you another V8 they can make money on than an EV that'll cost you less through lower maintenance costs.
As parts become more scarce for certain EVs β like early first-generation Chevrolet Bolt EVs β there's certainly a need for owners to roll their sleeves up and get involved in their own vehicle's upkeep (that is, unless they happen to have a friendly, knowledgeable independent garage nearby). But even when you do have to take your EV to a dealer, knowing some of the common faults, problems, and quirks can save you a massive headache and maybe a large repair bill.
So today, Nikki's doing some basic maintenance on her wife's Bolt EV β as well as a more in-depth software upgrade on her Comma AI pedal interceptor β all while discussing some of the ways you can keep your EV on the road for less, gain important knowledge, and save on big bills.

As the war in Iran continues β and with the ceasefire looking increasingly fragile β fuel prices are squeezing commuters who don't already drive an EV. And while some countries have a ready answer in affordable public transit and walkable cities, many places β particularly outside major US metros β simply don't.
So: electric bikes. Cheaper than an EV, increasingly practical, and genuinely transformative for the right commute. In this video, we cover the basics of how e-bikes work, what the legal landscape looks like in the US and Europe, what to watch out for when buying, and how to stay safe on the road.

As the temperature rises, Nikki has been continuing her planting - but she's also managed to replace her greenhouse cover AND plant it up for the growing season.
Plus, her plan of giving away her excess plants has been a rip-roaring success!
