HEAL BLACK JOY-Season 2: Episode 17
An in-depth conversation with Dr. Al-Tariq Moore. Dr. Moore is a writing instructor at East Carolina University. His teaching career spans eleven years and includes teaching composition, 20th Century African American literature, and Women's and Gender Studies courses. He is a research writer as well as a creative writer, currently compiling a book of poetry entitled Outside of Honor: Black Motherverse & Queer Black Boyspeak, slated for release in 2022.
Lola discusses with Dr. Tariq his journey as a young minister in the Christian community. Spiritual trauma occurs as a result of events that threaten and damage our core spiritual values and goals. This can be a result of either abuse by religious/spiritual figures or being raised with a toxic and overbearing interpretation of that religion or spiritual belief. Dr. Tariq recited one of his poems which depicts the sexual trauma that he experienced with a pastor of the church where he worked at. He also told stories of the financial abuse and manipulation of figureheads that want to control the day-to-day routine that he had. His story is very common in the black church community however, many victims don't want to come forward with their stories due to them still being involved with the church or embarrassed and afraid of the consequences of sharing their stories. The show was divine timing being that this video debuts on his birthday and tomorrow he graduates with his Ph.D. We celebrate him for his endurance to persevere and for overcoming these traumatic events of his life.
