Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and he’s Grogu, and We’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 319, and our feature topic is Disney with Teens vs Disney with Little Kids! In this week’s episode, we each talked about how your Disney trips will change when you are going with little kids versus going with teens. Here’s what we talked about:

Feature Topic: Disney with Teens vs Disney with Little Kids!
When planning, decide whether you are taking your kids out of school or not, depending on their age. School schedules matter.
With littles, you need to keep in mind the ride height requirements and what your little kids can and can’t ride.
Also, keep on top of what your family’s interests are.
Choosing your resort. Choose your resort based on your family ages, little kids, think about something like Art of Animation. Teens, based on budget, see if you can get a 2-bedroom villa so there is more space and place for kids to have their own space.
Value resorts don’t have water slides at the pools, but the Moderate resorts have water slides.
Keep in mind your family’s tastes for thrills/experiences. Characters, Rollercoasters, etc.
Disney Magic!!!
Teens: Sleep later, go to the parks later, stay until close.
Little Kids: Little kids wake up early, so you go early to the parks, mid-day breaks, and return later to close the parks.
Dining: take into account your kid/teen’s appetite
Evening entertainment – fireworks and your children’s tolerance for loud noises.
Little kids – make sure they know who the Cast Members are in case the parents get lost. Teens, not as big a concern.
Navigating Lightning Lanes for kids vs. teens can be very different. Kids – you generally choose for everyone. Teens – sometimes they ride things on their own

Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and he’s Grogu, and We’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 318, and our feature topic is The Best Disney Attraction Backstories! In this week’s episode, we each talked about a specific Disney attraction and the backstory behind the attraction. Here’s what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese:
Sophie: Interestingly, two Walt Disney World restaurants have now introduced a walk-up list feature. The Beak & Barrel in the Magic Kingdom will be adding it soon, and over at Epcot, Geo-82 will be adding it as well. Currently, it looks like the features aren’t fully available but if you are near the locations and look in the MDE app, you will see a button for their location that says to “Join Walk-Up List”.
Brenda: This is more rumor than anything, but it appears that the Disney Cruise Line may be bringing back departures out of New York City. There have been some updates on various cruise websites, such as the Manhattan Cruise Terminal website, and that is sparking discussion about whether DCL is returning to New York! No official word from Disney, but stay tuned!
Mike: We here at On the Road with Mickey would like to extend our thoughts and prayers to the family of Disney Legend Don Iwerks, who passed away at the age of 96 on July 9th. Don is the son of the legendary Ub Iwerks, and Don’s daughter Leslie has also worked on projects for Disney. Our prayers go out to Don’s wife Betty, his sons John & Larry, and his daughter Leslie. He was preceded in death by his cherished daughter, Tamara, who he carried in his heart always.

Thunder Mesa Backstory
EVERYTHING is owned by one Henry Ravenswood, founder of the Big Thunder Mining Co.
In childhood, Melanie was confined to the grounds of Ravenswood Manor
As she grew, she acquired a long line of suitors
Capt. Rowan D. Falls – Captain of the Mark Twain Riverboat (sent over a waterfall by Henry)
Ignatius Knight – An explosives manufacturer for Big Thunder Mining Co. (blew up in a dynamite explosion by Henry)
Barry Claude – An oil-field tycoon (led into the forest by Henry and mauled by a bear)
Sawyer Bottom – An owner of a Sawmill (tied to a log by Henry and sawed in half)
Jake – Melanie’s final suitor, a train engineer who planned to take her away from Thunder Mesa to start a new life (hanged from the rafters of the attic by a mysterious phantom)
Henry vowed to thwart the wedding of Jake & Melanie, but was killed in a massive earthquake before he could. The wedding plans proceeded despite the tragedy
On the day of the wedding however, Melanie dressed in her bridal gown and waited for Jake to arrive. He never did.
Heartbroken, Melanie vowed to wait for her beloved, but as days turned to weeks, months, years, she became a recluse in the now dilapidated manor.
Many questioned if she was still alive, but on quiet nights, her voice could be heard, singing melancholy songs of lost love.
All the while, a mysterious phantom (revealed to be the ghost of Henry Ravenswood) haunts the manor, inviting numbers of dead spirits to live there. Jake’s spirit never appears, theorized to be trapped in his hanging corpse, still suspended in the attic.
Brenda: Guardians of the Galaxy: Cosmic Rewind
The Guardians of the Galaxy are a team of intergalactic mercenaries (some say outlaws) who primarily defend the Andromeda galaxy. I agree with those that think of them as good guys — with an unconventional approach to the Super Hero business.
The team was founded in 2014 when Star-Lord, Gamora, Rocket, Groot, and Drax the Destroyer assembled to save Xandar from being decimated by Ronan the Accuser. Recognized by the Nova Empire, the Guardians were hired shortly after by the Sovereign’s leader Ayesha to defeat an Abilisk, but became their enemies when Rocket stole from them. They gained three new members in Mantis, Nebula and Yondu Udonta when they banded together to defeat Ego, which resulted in Udonta’s death. Nebula then left the team as the remaining Guardians resumed their adventures.
Four years later, the Guardians joined forces with the Avengers to stop Thanos from collecting the Infinity Stones.
Pre-show
At the end of the gallery, Terrans (inhabitants of Earth) are ushered to the final stop of the Wonders of Xandar Pavilion, hosted by Nova Prime Irani Rael of the Nova Corps. She welcomes the guests and begins by explaining how both Xandar and Terra were born of the same moment — the Big Bang. She then details how the Xandarians traveled through the galaxy to reach Terra to showcase their culture: by utilizing a Cosmic Generator, a piece of Xandarian technology that creates “jumpholes” that allowed them to create shortcuts to reach their destination much quicker. As a culmination of the Wonders of Xandar Pavilion, Terrans will be teleported to a Nova ship in space to demonstrate the Cosmic Generator. After Nova Prime’s presentation, Centurion Tal Marik of the Nova Corps welcomes Terrans and advises the prohibition of communication devices with recording capabilities (i.e. cellphones and smartphones), after which Terrans are ushered into the teleportation chamber.
After Terrans have been teleported to the Nova ship, the Cosmic Generator is stolen and the ship loses its power before a demonstration could be presented, prompting Nova Prime to urgently call the Guardians of the Galaxy for help. Peter Quill / Star-Lord, Gamora, Drax, Rocket, and Groot all appear on screen answering the distress call, only to discover that a Celestial named Eson, seen outside the Nova ship, has stolen the Cosmic Generator. Unhappy with the Terrans, the Celestial uses the Cosmic Generator to send Terra through a jumppoint to the dawn of time, with the intention of erasing its existence, before entering the jump point itself.
Quill urges Centurion Tal Marik to follow Eson while the Guardians rendezvous with the Nova ship to stop the Celestial but is unable to do so due to the lack of power in the ship and needing to send Terrans to evacuation shuttles. However, Rocket suggests he can control the shuttles to have the Terrans follow Eson via jumpholes and rendezvous with them instead, as they are their only way of tracking the Celestial in order to recover the Cosmic Generator. Terrans are then led to the corridors of the loading platforms to board their evacuation shuttles.
Ride experience
As the shuttles depart, Terrans begin making their way out of the Nova ship to enter the jumppoint in their evacuation shuttles. Peter Quill / Star-Lord and Gamora assure them that they’re tracking the shuttles to meet them, while Drax and Rocket instead make pessimistic remarks about the situation. The Guardians wish the Terrans luck as they set off, and after crossing the jumppoint the Terrans arrive at Eson’s location, where it holds the Cosmic Generator. Shortly after, the Guardians of the Galaxy arrive in their ship as Eson prepares to throw the Cosmic Generator towards Terra, who disregards Quill’s music from the Guardians’ ship as “noise”. The Guardians then blast the Cosmic Generator from the Celestial’s hands, opening another jumppoint which proceeds to suck everything in, taking them all the way back in time to the Big Bang and eventually fading into complete darkness. Suddenly, the evacuation shuttles are launched backwards in an explosion, and it is at this point that the vehicles begin their spinning profiles on their axis to achieve a sensation of “space travel” while the story develops around them with a randomized song selection out of six.
As the evacuation shuttles travel through multiple jumpholes along the way, the Guardians of the Galaxy engage in combat with Eson around the Terrans as they also cross multiple jumppoints. The Guardians finally lead a fleet of Nova Corp Starblasters to Eson, who manage to contain the Celestial and recover the Cosmic Generator. As the Guardians of the Galaxy travel far from the scene, they lead the Terrans to a final series of jumpholes that takes them to the Milky Way, then around the Moon before locking the coordinates for EPCOT and sending them back to Terra. As they arrive, Peter Quill welcomes the Terrans to the Guardians of the Galaxy, the rest of the team remarking amongst themselves as they disembark.
Mike: The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror
Picture this, if you will…
The Date is October 31, 1939
The Location: The Hollywood Tower Hotel
The Scene: A severe thunderstorm rolls over Hollywood. Lightning struck the hotel, and a service elevator carrying five guests disappeared into another dimension. The hotel is abandoned, and decades later is opened to the public for tours.
To gain an understanding of what the attraction would look like, the Walt Disney Imagineering team watched ALL 156 episodes of the Twilight Zone series, and they deliberately chose pieces from several different episodes to include in the attraction.
In the queue, you enter the forgotten lobby of the Hollywood Tower Hotel, complete with:
Dust-covered furniture
Half-finished drinks
Luggage that was never claimed
Cobwebs everywhere
A stopped grandfather clock
Basically, what you are entering is into a space that has not changed since that fateful night, October 31, 1939.
As for the ride itself, well, you don’t just fall. You enter the 5th dimension that Rod Serling mentioned in the opening of every episode of The Twilight Zone. Then, you don’t just fall – you fall FASTER than gravity! Lastly, computer technology since 2002 randomly changes each drop sequence, so you never have the same exact ride each time.
As for the building – it is deliberately built at 199 feet. This is because if it was 200 feet tall, FAA regulations would require an airplane beacon be placed on top of the building, which would affect the theming of the attraction.
Fun Fact: In two days from the airing of this episode, The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror will celebrate its 32nd anniversary of opening on July 22, 1994
“Tower of Terror isn’t my favorite attraction. However, the way the Imagineers have created such a suspension of disbelief, it is truly like you have left Florida, you have left Walt Disney World, you have left Hollywood Studios, and you have entered another time, another place, and entered into the Hollywood Tower Hotel on October 31, 1939. That is why this backstory is so captivating to me.”

This is episode 316, and our feature topic is How to Plan When One Person Is the Disney Fan and Everyone Else Is Along for the Ride! This week, we are taking a look at how you plan your Disney trips when everyone isn’t completely into Disney things. Here’s what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese:
Mike: The big news for me was the Grand Floridian Gingerbread House not being brought back for this year. Originally the news was that it was permanently retired, but Disney has released a statement that indicates that it will not be there this year, but leaving hope out there that it might be there in future years.
Sophie: Coming to the Mickey Not-So-Scary Halloween Party entertainment this year: Captain Jack Sparrow! Disney indicates that guests are invited to “Sail over to Adventureland, where Captain Jack Sparrow has dropped anchor to lead a swashbuckling series of pirate antics.” No word yet on what that means exactly.
Brenda: Disneyland’s Haunted Mansion will close on August 8 and reopen on August 21st as part of its annual seasonal overlay transformation. When it reopens, the Mansion will be in its Nightmare Before Christmas overlay!

Feature Topic: How to Plan When One Person Is the Disney Fan and Everyone Else Is Along for the Ride
Look at golf reservations for part of your party if they are golfers
Prioritize the party and what they like and dislike.
Take them to the parts of Disney that are not so “Disneyfied”
Tailor the trip around special needs and requirements, such as scooters, etc.
Acknowledge the fact that your family and friends are still willing to go with you even though they aren’t super fans.
Look at the weather issues and factor in comfort level for family members.
Epcot, not all Disney but there are a lot of great holiday activities.
Focus on what they like at home that is Disney (i.e. movies and so forth)
Resort activities, pools, etc, that don’t require a park ticket.
Your resort choice matters to make sure you have amenities that other people will be able to do things outside of the parks.
Disney Springs & Boardwalk Areas
Have to try some of the rides! Not all of them, but give them a shot!
Wide World of Sports visit or one round of mini-golf (as part of your package inclusions)
Split time between WDW and Universal or other non-Disney Florida attractions
Very unique, fine dining experiences at Disney. Allergy friendly needs, styles of dining, and there is something for everyone!
Look at babysitting services or family watching little ones so that the adults can have a date night.

This week, we are taking a look at the things we think about when we are 30 days out from our Disney trip! Here’s what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese:
Brenda: Disney Springs-to-resort transportation is becoming more restricted. Starting June 28, 2026, guests using transportation from Disney Springs to Disney Resort hotels are expected to need proof of a Disney hotel stay or a confirmed resort dining or experience reservation.
Mike: We would like to express our sympathy to the family of Margaret Kerry, the original actor for Tinkerbell, on her passing at the age of 97. Margaret was the live performer that recorded the scenes that the animators then used to come up with Tinkerbell’s iconic style of movement, so whenever you watch Peter Pan, you’ll see Margaret Kerry in the scenes with Tinkerbell. On the Road with Mickey would like to extend our prayers to her family and friends in their time of grief.

30 days out – if you have not added insurance, decide if you are adding insurance, and then, make sure you make your final payment.
Start making a list of things I need to pack
Build the excitement by posting daily attraction pictures of things you want to experience.
Online check-in.
Focus on getting ahead of daily tasks so that you can enjoy your trip.
Mail hold
Stay in communication with your neighbors so they know you are going out of town.
Brenda’s Snack List!
Create a Spotify playlist for car travel.
Check out the resort amenities to familiarize yourself with things you can do there.
Make sure you have prescription refills for your medications.
Take care of any potential issues you need to address from a womanly perspective.
Things you might need – e.g. eyeglass repair kit.
Grocery list for making food in your room to prepare for eating.
Start looking at menus for your dining reservations to see what you are interested in eating.
Resort requests – room, building, non-pet room for allergies, etc.
Resort special events – such as carriage rides and so forth.
Order those items now that you will need for your trip.
Resort delivery Disney can add delivery charge fees.
Disney countdown ideas from books, Pinterest, Instagram, etc.
Themed shirts for your family, get them ordered at the 30 day mark so that you can receive them in time and make sure everything fits and gets packed.
Lightning Lane – decide if you are going to order Multi-Pass and Single-Pass – Resort guests purchase at 7 days out, non-resort guests purchase at 3 days out.
If you have someone not in your family traveling with you, Brenda recommends bringing a letter for that person in case emergency care is needed signed by their family.

Hey everyone, I’m Mike, she’s Sophie, that’s Brenda, and he’s Grogu, and We’re On the Road with Mickey! This is episode 314, and our feature topic is What Season of Disney are you in? This week, we are taking a look at the way our Disney Walk has progressed over the years! Here’s what we talked about:
Cheddar from the Big Cheese:
Sophie: Disney Legends Paige O’Hara and Mark Henn will be traveling to Chicago, Illinois, for a special 35th Anniversary screening of Beauty and the Beast on June 27th. They will have a Q&A panel for this D23 event before the movie.
Brenda: The entertainment showtimes for Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party have been released. During party nights, the first Boo-to-You Parade will be at 8:15PM. Following that will be the Not-So-Spooky Spectacular fireworks at 10:00PM, and a second run of the Boo-to-You Parade will likely be at 11:15PM. That second parade time isn’t official, but the times for the others are and they match last year’s times, so chances are that the second parade will also.
Mike: What a feel-good story out of Animal Kingdom! The medical team at Animal Kingdom was able to perform a very rare cataract surgery on Kendi, a 27-year old White Rhino, that restored her vision! This is an extremely complex procedure that involved years of planning and truly shows how much love and care the animal care Cast Members have for their charges!

Sophie: For King & Country concert cancellation

Mike: COVID closing Disney – reopening 2 days before our trip
Chandler: Planned a big family reunion to WDW — 6 families, with the kids and grandkids. When it came time to commit, people dropped out like flies. Ended up changing to a week in Branson MO with just the three of us, and my Mom and her husband. It was just fine
Chrissy: Me trying to find food to fit my allergies diet finally got help from amazing CMs and chef at Liberty Tree Tavern.
Feature Topic: Our Favorite Epcot Experiences that make our trip special!
Sophie:
I used to go with the flow, do what Daddy planned, and now I plan some out as well. Starting to take the reins and also enjoy the process.
Working towards having a family to share Disney with and potentially an Annual Pass.
Brenda:
The current season is Chill Season. We are in a time where we’ve done the up at the crack of dawn, then we did a span where it was just the two of us, now we are just chill, just sleep late, just go to the park in the afternoon, close them down, see our favorite shows, ride our favorites, and so forth. Every season trip she purchases Memory Maker, and now she still does that, because you never know when your last trip is your last trip.
Mike:
What I like about this topic is that it gives us a trip down Memory Lane of our past trips. We explored how things were in the beginning, when I would easily take 200 photos a day of our trip, and journeyed back in time to some of our fond memories – like when we purchased DVC, how that opened up our opportunities to bring more family with us to Disney. Trips with Stephanie, how now for me it’s all about making memories with my family, and choosing rides that we can all enjoy together. We also have an opportunity in the future to be able to have Brenda, Sophie, and myself all enjoying the Twilight Zone Tower of Terror and recording an episode of On the Road with Mickey in the process! Stay tuned!

Mike: In the “Don’t Blink” category for Cheddar, news from Disney that the Virtual Queue required for access to Bluey’s Wild World, which was required when the area opened on May 26th, is no longer needed as of June 2nd.
Sophie: Do you like a Pineapple Upside Down cake? If you do, the Disney Parks Blog has the recipe for the pineapple upside down cake that you can get at the Plaza Inn at Disneyland on their website! Brenda: Every week we see additional updates on the transformation of Disney’s Hollywood Studios! The Animation Courtyard transformation is almost done, and the return of The Magic of Disney Animation will be here before we know it! The Courtyard area is now open, and this outdoor area is meant to draw you as if you were transformed to the iconic Burbank studio lot!
Mike: Over at Universal Orlando Resort, a BIG change is coming to Hagrid’s Magical Creatures Motorbike Adventure. The attraction at Islands of Adventure will no longer be included with the Universal Orlando Express Pass system! This change takes place effective on July 1st.
Sophie: In Millenium Falcon: Smuggler’s Run, we reported how the ride was changed to include the Mandalorian and Grogu with the release of the movie – which, by the way, cleared 100 million over Memorial Day weekend! Anyway, in addition to the obvious references to Mando and Grogu, you can now activate Grogu Mode, which replaces Chewie Mode for the ride!

Sophie: Bluey’s Wild World Opens at Animal Kingdom Park on May 26th! This will be located at the Conservation Station as part of the Cool KIDS’ Summer, but will continue beyond the summer months. Interestingly, Disney must think this is going to be a big hit because access will be limited to a virtual queue at the opening of the area. You can sign up for it in the My Disney Experience app.
Brenda: Casting calls went out for performers for Mickey’s Very Merry Christmas Party for the Frozen Holiday Surprise and Mickey’s Most Merriest Celebration. Before you know it, Christmas will be here!
Mike: Congratulations are in order for Jeff Vahle, the President of Walt Disney World Resort, who announced that he is retiring from the Company after 36 years at the end of the summer. We wish him well in his retirement and in the next season of his life!

Mike: Mickey’s Not So Scary Halloween Party tickets are now on sale for guests of select Disney resorts and will go on sale to the general public on May 12. This specially-ticketed annual event is offered during select nights from August 7 through October 31.
Sophie: On May 22, in conjunction with the Star Wars: The Mandalorian & Grogu Movie, the Millenium Falcon will have an adjustment to Smuggler’s Run with a new mission involving them!
Brenda:The reopening of Big Thunder Mountain Railroad has brought about an expected change to Lightning Lane Multi Pass at Magic Kingdom. BTMRR will now be offered as a Tier 1 offering along with Space Mountain, Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, Peter Pan’s Flight and the Jungle Cruise.

NCL sailing on the brand-new Norwegian Cruise Line ship Luna. First time sailing. 3 night, 4 day, Great Stirrup Cay in the Bahamas. Port of Miami, balcony stateroom on deck 14! Queen size bed, sofa, nice bathroom, designed for two people.
Hudson’s and the Commodore, same dinner menu. Hudson’s had a more expansive view. Several specialty dining.

Overall, a really good experience and I would do it again!
