Naltrexone’s Effect on Auto-Immune Disease and Inflammation

Naltrexone is a drug that blocks the opioid effects of drugs. The opioid effect is also known as pain relief. Naltrexone, given in doses of 50mg or 100mg, blocks opioid drugs, aka narcotic drugs, from attaching to our nervous system receptors. However, researchers have found that given in small doses, Naltrexone has huge benefits for those suffering from an auto-immune disease, specific types of cancer and IBS, among others.

How does Naltrexone Work?

Naltrexone will bind to the receptors in your body which creates inflammation. Chronic disease leads to a chronic inflammation cycle. Naltrexone binds to your opioid receptors, not allowing your body to inflame and break the inflammation cycle.

My Experience with Naltrexone

I’ve been living in pain daily, with few exceptions for the past two years. While seeing Amie and Rory at Peak Medical for weight loss and hormone balance, I relayed to Amie that my pain level had been rising the past few months and I wasn’t able to get my pain under control. She had recently been to a medical conference and heard a speaker talk about Naltrexone for symptoms of auto-immune disease and asked if I’d like to try out Naltrexone. I said yes!

Within two days of starting 1.5 mg of Naltrexone per day, almost all of my body, muscle, and joint pain were completely gone, along with my overall body stiffness. I felt that I’d been given a new body! Not only was my pain gone, but I was also able to work out better and feel better post-workout as a result of being in less pain! This drug is amazing! A friend of mine who had similar symptoms took Naltrexone and had similar results. 

Starting off at 1.5mg, the Naltrexone dose is elevated over time until correct dosing is found. I’m currently at 3mg per day and started taking Naltrexone about six months ago. I love the way I feel and although I do get flare-ups, I can manage them much better.

Travel Options and Health Precautions You Can Use During COVID Pandemic

Health Precautions

Look to the CDC website for proper precautions to take to prevent the spread of COVID-19 and Coronavirus common questions and answers. Three common precautions we hear about regularly are:

• Wash your hands for 20 seconds
• Social distancing at least six feet apart
• Use hand sanitizer with a minimum of 60% alcohol

Learn about travel advice for those who must travel and the latest worldwide travel updates from the World Health Organization here on their website.

COVID Travel Options

If you are at high risk because of age or immunocompromised health, staying at home is your best bet. Always seek and take the advice of your medical practitioner when your health and safety are involved.

Are you having a bad case of cabin fever and are not in a high-risk category? You’re in luck as there are a few travel activities you can still participate in when you are healthy and not in the high-risk group.

Take a Day Trip to a National Forest or National Parks

The National Forests and National Parks are now free to go and roam! Many places inside the park are closed, however, you can still hike and enjoy the outdoors in the national forests and parks. Take a day trip to a National Park or National Forest, enjoy the outdoors, bring a picnic and spend time with your family outside. Plan your trip ahead of time to a National Park by downloading a park PDF map by looking up a National Park on the National Park website here. 

National Forest Service website can be accessed here and lists currently available activities inside the parks. “The Forest Service is taking the risks presented by COVID-19 seriously and is following USDA and CDC public health guidance as we continue to offer services to the public. Visitors to our National Forests and Grasslands are urged to take the precautions recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). There are three official, government-wide sources of up-to-date information about the coronavirus: Coronavirus.gov, CDC.gov/coronavirus, and USA.gov/coronavirus.”

Utah State Parks are also open and you can visit the Utah State Park website by visiting here. Their website is keeping a page for COVID-19 updates here. “The Utah Division of Parks and Recreation takes the health and safety of our visitors and employees seriously. 

Employees have been asked to clean high-traffic areas or highly-used materials regularly, as well as to not report to work should there be concerns about their health status.

We encourage everyone visiting state parks practice #ResponsibleRecreation. This means: separating yourself and honoring the social distance of others, avoiding crowded trailheads and areas; and keeping parks and facilities clean.”

Solving the Gluten-Free Puzzle with Susan Neal

Did You Know There are Four Types of Gluten-Related Disorders?

Susan and I chat about the four types of gluten-related disorders: celiac disease, non-celiac gluten sensitivity, wheat sensitivity, and wheat allergy. These four conditions affect about ten percent of the population, however; over half of those individuals do not realize they have this health issue because their symptoms range from gastrointestinal distress to joint pain. Individuals aren’t making the connection between diet and their body reacting negatively to wheat or gluten. 

Gluten Sensitivity and Wheat Allergy

When her sister was diagnosed with nonceliac gluten-sensitivity, Susan realized how hard the gluten-free lifestyle was to adjust to from a regular diet. As a child, Susan was allergic to wheat but grew out of the allergy as a teen. When she had a health crisis eight years ago, she was tested and realized she became wheat sensitive. She was inspired to write her book Solving the Gluten Puzzle: Discover if You are Gluten Sensitive and How to Embrace the Gluten-Free Lifestyle? to help others discover if gluten might be an issue and how to transition to a gluten-free diet. 

Solving the Gluten Puzzle helps readers put together your health care puzzle as there is no specific test to diagnose non-celiac gluten sensitivity nor irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Therefore, the lack of testing creates extreme difficultly to attaining a proper diagnosis. Celiac disease has increased by 400 percent in the past fifty years; scientists believe there must be external factors causing the rise in this disease. 

Non-Classic Celiac Disease

Celiac disease is an autoimmune disorder whereby the body attacks its own gastrointestinal system when a person ingests gluten. However, with non-classic celiac disease, an individual may not even suffer from typical GI symptoms and not be aware they have celiac disease. Anyone can develop celiac disease at any age with any combination of over 200 celiac disease symptoms. To obtain a proper diagnosis the person must be eating gluten when being tested.

Auto-Immune Disease, Leaky Gut and Digestive Health with Jenny Finke

Welcome to Spring Into Health! The first of a series of four podcasts dedicated to health, healing and auto-immune disease.

Why Digestive Health is So Important?

In this episode, Jenny and I are diving into how to heal your gut, especially when you have a leaky gut. While leaky gut does not have a test on its own, there are several factors that can lead to leaky gut.

First, you need to have an auto-immune gene that triggers an auto-immune condition. Secondly, you could have a biome imbalance in your gut. Third, a poor diet or a diet high in gluten can assist in triggering a leaky gut. 

What is Leaky Gut?

Leaky gut is the condition of your gut lining that has extensive tiny permeations. These permeations, or holes in your gut lining, allowing food to travel from your gut into your bloodstream. Uneaten tiny food particles are seen as invaders in your bloodstream and your body will attempt to get rid of these tiny pieces of food, thus causing inflammation in your body. Unless healed, your food will continue to leak out into your gut, which can cause immune system issues.

The inflammation in your digestive tract caused by leaky gut can result in food intolerances and click an auto-immune gene to “on” even if you’ve never had the disease in your life previously.

She also refers to the work of Dr. Tom O’Bryan and his research on autoimmune disease. He’s found that auto-immune diseases will impact you at your weakest link in our chain. Wherever your weakest link, joints, stomach, skin or bones, is where you will see symptoms. This is the main reason auto-immune disorders are hard to diagnose as they show up with different symptoms depending on the individual.

We also chat about resting your gut and why giving your gut a break is extremely important when you are healing your gut. “Think about celiac disease as breaking your digestive system. It now needs to rest and recover.”

We talk about our experience in Paris and the two dedicated gluten-free establishments we found: Helmut Nutcake and Little Nona’s. These are two places in France you can safely eat gluten-free! Fun and Fabulous Things to Do in London

Stonehenge 

Built over 1000 years ago, archaeologists and anthropologists are finding out more about Stonehenge through scientific studies. A must-see if you visit London, Stonehenge is a short walk from the interactive museum, where you can purchase a fair-trade sheep hat for 25 pounds!

Salisbury Cathedral

The Shard

Modern buildings are usually tall, rectangular edifices towering high into the sky. While The Shard is the latter, the design of this building will blow your mind! Gluten Free London

Traveling to London? You’re in luck! Episode 77 is targeted toward gluten-free food in London! Listen in to find out how you can find gluten-free food in London, what restaurants I loved to eat at and the European Allergen Codex and how you can use this allergen codex while you are traveling in Europe. Find fabulous places to eat and a new trick I learned on how to find gluten-free places to eat when you’re traveling abroad.

If you’re interested in fun gluten-free food, London, England is the place you want to visit! You’re bound to find gluten-free in many food ethnicities when perusing London restaurants. Like fried food? No worries! London is teeming with food establishments that have dedicated fryers. I’ve eaten more than my fair share of fried food while in London, and I believe you will too!

Want to eat a delicious gluten-free dessert from a dedicated gluten-free bakery? You’ll find many dedicated bakeries, so eat pastries, doughnuts, and croissants to your heart’s content - and remember to leave space in your luggage to bring home goodies you’ve acquired from London! 

European Allergen Codex

European Allergen Codex is a system in which you can easily see what allergens are in different foods in restaurants. When you use this system, remember that they list the opposite of the US - where we show what foods you CAN eat, the European Allergen Codex shows which allergens are in the food. For example, if you see the letter “G” next to a food, that food contains gluten and is NOT gluten-free.

This Codex is the same system across the countries in Europe which I have traveled, which is nice to worry about one less thing when you are eating while traveling. If the restaurant doesn’t have the Codex Allergen list on their menu, as the maitre’d if they have an allergen menu as they may have a few copies of a special menu which labels allergens. Many restaurants I ate at in Europe were very accomodating and went out of their way to serve safe food.i

Better Quality Food in London and Europe

With the exception of the plane ride, I’m always excited about traveling to and in Europe, especially when I think about the amazing food I’m going to eat. The quality of food is much better, as many foods are locally sourced and fresh. Europe does not use GMO and modified foods on the scale as we do in the US and factory farming isn’t their mainstay for raising food. Because of these factors, the food in Europe tastes better, and has less of the chemicals and hormones which we have in our food.

I’ve heard from other Celiacs that they can eat the dairy in Europe, but not the US. I have experienced the same. While I can eat imported dairy without issue, American dairy poses many digestive issues for my system. 

Vegetarian and Vegan Options in London

My daughter Aliyah is Celiac and vegetarian, which offers yet another level or two of complexity when we eat out. In London, however, there are quite a few options for those who are both gluten-free and vegetarian or vegan. I’ve even come across vegetarian restaurants who offer many gluten-free options on their menu! There are many vegetarian and vegan options in general in London. Additionally, many restaurants also offer dairy-free!

Gluten-Free Friendly Restaurants in London

My favorite restaurant in London, by far, was Honest Burgers. Located at 9 festival terrace, South Bank, London. They have dedicated gluten-free fryers, onion rings, burgers, can eat all fried foods. They also have gluten-free brews, incredible to eat burger, onion rings and brew together

Art Museums

There are multiple art museums you can check out while you’re in Salt Lake City. Make sure to check hours for each art museum on their websites listed here. The Utah Museum of Fine Art is all about the history of art across the world. There are two museums that host modern art and are free and open to the public:  Urban Arts Gallery and the Utah Museum of Contemporary Art. 

Science and Nature Museums

From pre-historic dinosaurs to science, STEM and gardens, Salt Lake has a myriad of science and nature museums to see. See exhibits, movies, planetarium shows and IMAX shows exploring space and technology at Clarke Planetarium.  Find dinosaurs lurking about, Native American cultural artifacts and learn about genetics the Natural History Museum of Utah. When you visit The Museum of Natural Curiosity you’ll get to explore over 400 different interactive exhibits - no two visits will ever be the same. For an eclectic mix of art and science, check out The Leonardo. Visit the Hogle Zoo to walk through a safari of wild animals from all over the world.
