With the village now about two thirds in and everyone on a break before South Korea, Asha checks in with Christy, a solo parent traveling with her 11-year-old son.
Christy shares how a sudden loss changed everything for her. After her husband passed away, she made the decision to leave her job and take her son on a longer journey. Traveling Village became a way to do that without being alone.
They talk about what it actually feels like to do something like this as a single parent. The fear before joining, the relief of having other adults around, and how much the community changes the experience for both parent and child.
The podcast follows 20 families as we travel together through Vietnam, Taiwan, and South Korea as a village. This season, Asha, who joined Traveling Village 1, calls in every week to talk with different people on the trip and follow along from afar. Each episode is around 20 minutes and is meant to give an honest, grounded sense of what village life feels like as it unfolds.
In this episode, Asha and Christy talk about: • What led Christy to say yes to Traveling Village • Traveling as a single parent and what she was worried about • Why co-living made such a difference day to day • Finding a rhythm in Taiwan and what she enjoyed most • The harder parts, from earthquakes to feeling on edge • How kids connect across ages and languages • Staying connected as a parent in a very social environment • Workgroups and what it means to take part in the village • Letting go of doing everything alone and accepting help • Choosing to continue this way of living after the trip
In the next episode, Asha will talk with another family from the village to hear how their experience of Traveling Village 3 is unfolding as the journey continues.
