Dr Edmund Barter, lead data scientist at CheckRisk

The 2008 banking crisis demonstrated how when one bank fails, the impact will be felt far and wide. The collapse of Lehman Brothers led other banks to collapse, showing how contagion can spread quickly.

The crisis provided lessons for us all, heightening awareness among risk and treasury professionals of just how damaging a meltdown elsewhere can be.

Thankfully risk management has come on leaps and bounds in recent years, and technology has played a large part in that. Risk consultancy firm CheckRisk has created BankFox, software that allows users to monitor a bank’s distance to distress to help treasurers measure and assess risks, and how the risk that could build up at one bank might spread to others.

In this podcast, Dr Edmund Barter, lead data scientist at CheckRisk, looks at how the global banking network is connected and how understanding the risks is the system can be paramount.

Using the 2008 banking crisis and the more modern example of the Coronavirus potentially impacting the global economy, Barter demonstrates how risk can spread through entry points – which are often banks that deal with foreign economies that are more prone to upheaval.

        • Treasury Live: Dealing with unprecedented levels of change

In the latest episode of our Treasury Live Podcast, we talk to Royston da Costa, Assistant Group Treasurer at Ferguson plc.

This podcast discusses how treasurers are dealing with unprecedented levels of change. Royston told us recently that, despite having been in treasury for over 30 years, he can honestly state that he has never experienced a more significant time in the evolution of the profession than now.

With this in mind, we discuss the following:

          • Why Royston thinks today is such a significant time in treasury’s evolution than ever before?
          • Where he thinks treasury is heading?
          • What skills, therefore, treasurers need?
          • Royston’s views on technology and why it is clearly a key driver of change within treasury and what has the potential to be a game changer?
          • From his experiences, the tips and tricks he can share with fellow treasurers when it comes to digital transformation and change?
          • How an effective transformation strategy can be developed?

          • Treasury Live: It’s time to make your cash work harder

Welcome to the latest podcast in the The Global Treasurer’s Treasury LIVE series.

In this latest episode of our Treasury Live series, we discuss why, in today’s volatile business world, treasurers need to enhance liquidity, diversify counterparty risk and maximise yield, perhaps more than they ever have before. In short, it’s time treasurers made their organisation’s cash work harder.

Discussing this topic in more detail is Bobby Jackson, Managing Director at FXD Capital, who use their experience in treasury, cash, cash equivalent instruments and liquidity management to bridge the gap between depositor and bank.

            Topics covered include:

            • The need for enhanced access to cash and liquidity in today’s economic climate
            • How corporate treasurers can make their cash work harder and maximize its value
            • The options available to organizations when it comes to enhancing returns
            • If this means treasurers should be looking beyond their banks and challenging the status quo in order to balance risk and returns
            • We hope you enjoy the podcast – let us know your thoughts – and do get in touch if you would like to feature in future episodes.

            • Treasury Live: Regulation and its impact on treasury

Welcome to second podcast in the The Global Treasurer’s new Treasury LIVE series – where we’re going to bring you interviews with some of the leading players in the treasury space.

Following on from part one of our discussion with Professor Moorad Choudhry, which talked about the future of banking, this episode focuses on regulation.

The old saying goes that in this world, nothing is certain in life except death and taxes. However, anybody involved in banking and treasury would argue that there’s one more thing to add to that list – regulation.

The ever-changing, shapeshifting, seemingly evermore arduous list of regulations is a constant headache for treasurers – and the impact of regulations on treasury can be large.

In this podcast we discuss the major regulatory challenges, how to go beyond compliance requirements and much more.

We hope you enjoy the podcast – let us know your thoughts – and do get in touch if you would like to feature in future episodes.

            • Treasury Live: Is the future of banking more traditional than you think?

Welcome to The Global Treasurer’s new Treasury LIVE series – where we’re going to bring you interviews with some of the leading players in the treasury space.

To kick things off, Austin Clark speaks to Professor Moorad Choudhry about the future of banking. Moorad is a senior banker with extensive experience covering commercial, investment and retail banking – and has managed treasury desks at different banks – as well as designing and founding the BTRM Certificate of Bank Treasury Risk Management.

In the discussion, Moorad uses that experience to paint a picture around why modernization is inevitable – driven by factors such as digitalization, open standards and regulation, amongst others – but how the future banking landscape might be more traditional than you think.

We hope you enjoy the podcast – let us know your thoughts – and do get in touch if you would like to feature in future episodes.

            • A comprehensive introduction to supply chain finance (including views of corporate treasurers)

Supply chain finance (SCF) is a large and growing industry. In 2015, a McKinsey report suggested that SCF had a potential global revenue pool of $20 billion, while in 2017 China’s supply chain finance sector was tipped to reach US$2.27 trillion by 2020. Additionally, a 2017 ICC survey of banks in 98 different countries identified SCF as the most important area for development and strategic focus in the coming 12 months.

Clearly supply chain finance is an important topic for anyone involved in trade and trade finance to be familiar with. However, at a recent ICC Academy summit on SCF, several speakers suggested there are still trillions of dollars’ worth of unmet needs in this market.

According to Roberto Azevedo, Director General for the World Trade Organization “A lack of access to trade finance is a barrier preventing small business from making the most of the opportunities that trade provides, and it demands our urgent attention”.

So how can finance and treasury professionals help improve access to finance and keep their own supply chains healthy? As with most challenges, it pays to start with education.

To help trade professionals gain a solid understanding of the different techniques involved in SCF and the benefits for all parties involved, the ICC Academy has put together a comprehensive free guide to supply chain finance using some of the best material from our premium trade finance courses. The guide also includes case studies from real businesses in the SCF industry.

              Video exclusive

As an exclusive bonus for Global Treasurer readers, you can also learn how corporate treasurers from companies including Rio Tinto and General Mills are managing supply chain finance in the video below. This is a recording of a panel discussion at the ICC Academy’s 2019 Supply Chain Finance Summit in Singapore. In this panel we discuss what the objectives are for corporate treasurers in supply chain finance, and how have things have changed in the recent past including – key factors, considerations, roadblocks, failures and challenges.

Until recently, many of the processes involved in the supply chain have not been seen as part of the treasurer’s remit. However, as the role of the treasurer has evolved away from being focused simply on cash management to become more strategic, the concerns involved in supply chain finance management have moved into the treasurer’s arena.

If you have any further questions about supply chain finance or specifically about the role of treasurers, please get in touch at [email protected] or on Twitter @TheICCAcademy.

            • Efficiency is primary pain point for treasury managers, says Jim Gifas

Treasury managers see innovation as primarily a tool for countering business problems and improving efficiency in their organisations, according to Capital One’s new Senior Vice President.

Jim Gifas, who joined the financial company last month to head up its Treasury Management Product Management & Innovation Group, made the comments in an interview podcast with Karen Webster, CEO of Mobile Platform Dynamics.

“When I think about pain points for treasury managers, what really comes to mind is what their main objective is at the end of the day, and that is to build their business, to make it very strong, very efficient and to drive revenue and value for their customers,” he said. “So I think that’s how they think about the pain points. I don’t think they necessarily think about banking or any of the other things that impact on their business as pain points. It’s: how can they be more efficient to drive value into their business?”

Whilst the global financial crisis and ongoing problems in Europe caused nervous firms to “hoard” their cash, over the past two years, treasury managers have started releasing this operating cash for acquisitions and investments. According to Gifas, this has led to renewed interest in finding better ways to streamline payment processes, pay down debt and strengthen operating balance sheets. He said: “On the payment side, we’ve seen a tremendous amount of activity and innovation going on, driven by “how can I be more efficient and streamlined in making these payments?””

But this innovation is targeted and results-driven, with treasury managers concerned with boosting performance rather than simply adopting the latest technology.

“Innovation is a tool for them to help stop a business problem. Treasury managers don’t just adopt innovation like consumers do, because consumers want the newest trend,” Gifas pointed out. “They look at innovation as: okay, how can I leverage that technology, that product, that service, to fix a problem that exists in my business?”
