Trek Untold: The Star Trek Podcast That Goes Beyond The Stars!

The first season of Star Trek TNG showcased some breakthroughs in visual FX for television and was truly groundbreaking with what that post-production team accomplished. Fred Raimondi was one member of that group of pioneers, but his time in Star Trek was just a footnote in his prolific career.

We discuss Fred's beginnings as a filmmaker and the internship that changed the course of his life, how he got into VFX during his time with The Post Group in California doing "The Twilight Zone," being a VFX artist on "Max Headroom," and the road it led to working on Star Trek TNG thanks to Rob Legato.

From there, it's stories of Greg Hutzel and Dan Curry (along with Rob) on season 1 to explain How the original transporter beam effect was made, making VFX for ships and phasers, the infamous deleted scene from "Encounter at Farpoint" and his embarrassing story from an early screening of it that could have gotten him fired, Tasha Yar's death in "Skin of Evil," and the behind the scenes info on one of the goriest Trek VFX ever with the exploding body from "Conspiracy"!

Plus, being on the Star Trek episode of "Reading Rainbow" with Levar Burton, his Grammy award-winning work on the Rolling Stones music video "Love is Strong," the explosive Harrier jet scene climax to "True Lies," understanding the difference between optical effects and visual effects, advice on being in the VFX industry and how to stay relevant within it, and more!

Very few actors in Star Trek can reprise a role they did from one series to another, let alone a role that debuted in a film. Jeremy Roberts is one of those rare people who first played Commander Valtaine in the sixth Star Trek film serving on Captain Sulu's Excelsior. Roberts reprised the role for the third season Voyager episode "Flashback," working again with George Takei and this time Kate Mulgrew and Tim Russ.

Roberts literally followed a dream to become an actor. We learn all about his unusual path towards performing, his first gig on "Hooperman" with John Ritter, working on "Murder, She Wrote," "Sister Act," "Diagnosis Murder," "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," "The Mask" with Jim Carrey, his celebrity run-ins with John Wayne and Frank Gorshin, and an embarrassing day on the set of Xena.

And of course, plenty of Trek talk as we discuss his on-set memories of George Takei, Grace Lee Whitney, and his time on Star Trek VI and Voyager, along with his third role as a Jem'Hadar soldier in the DS9 episode, "Hippocratic Oath," which was a bit of a nightmare since he was incredibly sick during filming! Jeremy has had quite a career, and we dig deep in this episode to find out all about it!

This week, we're talking toys as we are joined by sculptor Steve Varner. This artist worked on toylines like Barbie, C.O.P.S., Army Ants, Inhumanoids, LJN WWF, Big Jim, and he sculpted the very first TMNT figure by playmates, alongside former Trek Untold guest Scott Hensey.

Steve discusses how he got into sculpting toys and some lines he worked in like, sculpting the aliens from the Star Trek TMP Mego figures, the mystery of the Will Riker figure's stance, how playmates figures are made, how Seaquest DSV figures influenced trek, what feature he wished the Trek figures had, meeting Star Trek actors, and a look at some unreleased star trek figures!

More recently, Steve was announced as part of the team sculpting the new Star Trek figures for Playmates, which are coming out later this year. Unfortunately, this interview was done before that was announced, so we could not discuss it, but I hope to have a follow-up soon to see what we can learn about those toys!

There aren't many characters in Star Trek history that had the same character in one show have multiple performers. Melanie Smith is one actress who can add that honor to her resume, as she played the third (and final) Tora Ziyal on "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine."

In this episode, we learn about Melanie's unusual road to acting, her first on-screen appearance and her first professional gig in "As the World Turns," what she learned from the legendary Stella Adler, her three appearances on "Seinfeld" including the historic "Shrinkage" episode with Voyager alumni Jason Alexander, her "nude" appearance on "Adventures of Brisco County Jr." with Bruce Campbell, and working with Andrew Robinson on the cult sci-fi film "Trancers 3".

After that, it's time for Trek talk about how Melanie got the part of Ziyal and how far she made it an earlier audition to almost become a member of the main cast, breaking down the romance of Ziyal and Garak, how she found the character and what part of Melanie was inside her, working with Andrew, Nana Visitor, and Marc Alaimo, learning the technobabble, what she did to make her version of Ziyal be different from others, and the full story of why Ziyal died!

Joe," Lance from "Voltron," Prowl and Sideswipe from "Transformers," Chaz Finster from "The Rugrats," and many many more! Michael also spent some time in the Star Trek franchise, starting with the TNG pilot "Encounter at Farpoint" as Gropler Zorn, and then returning later to DS9 as Borum in "The Homecoming" and Drofo Awa in "The Magquis, Part 2" concluding with roles in some of the Star Trek video games from that era.

Learn all about Michael's long road towards performing, his first role in the cult film "Damaged Goods," working on "The Monkees" and his scene with Micky Dolenz, his appearance on "M.A.S.H.," "Three's Company," how he found his way into voiceover acting and learning from legendary pros like Mel Blanc, how he creates his voices and the memorable emotional moment as Chaz Finster in the Mother's Day episode from "The Rugrats."

I have a passion for animation that might rival my love of Star Trek, so it's exciting when I get a chance to have these two worlds collide! In today's episode, we chat with Amanda Turnage, a background artist from "Star Trek: Lower Decks," who has done some very interesting pieces of work for the series, including interiors and exteriors of starships, the Las Vegas of the Beta Quadrant in Qualor, and the highly beloved Cetacean Ops aboard the USS Cerritos.

We learn about Amanda's history in art & animation and hear about some of her other jobs and the things she learned along the way before discussing the workflow on "Lower Decks" and getting a deeper understanding of how this particular job works and the fun Trek things she gets to do as part of it!
