 The book covers the life of Al Kooper, born February 5, 1944, he began his musical journey at 14 playing guitar with the Royal Teens. At 16, he wrote “This Diamond Ring” for  Gary Lewis. He founded Blood Sweat and Tears, and left after their first album, created the first “jam” album,  with  “Super Session." His solo career began with “I Stand Alone." He played on albums by The Who, Hendrix, The Stones, B.B. King, Ringo and George, and others.  Al produced and promoted groups Lynryd Skynyrd, The Tubes, The Zombies, and others. Today, Al has a  podcast, KooperKast, reflecting on his 60+ years in music. I hope you enjoy this musical look into his career.

This  weekend we count down Peppermint, who we celebrated on his birthday this week.  Nelson D. Harrison, Jr., was born on July 17, 1925, in Texarkana, Texas. He moved to Houston and began his career playing local clubs. Nelson invented his stage name "Peppermint" in response to the success of other local friends and performers with nicknames like Clarence "Gatemouth" Brown and Sam "Lightnin'" Hopkins.  Lightnin’  helped him get his first chance to record in 1947 in Houston.  Harris later recorded in Shreveport, and worked in Sacramento, Claifornia and in New Jersey, before recording his final album in 1995. He passed in 1999, in Elizabeth, New Jersey.  Now, let’s start the count down!

Byron Douglas Berline, born July 6, 1944, in Caldwell, Kansas was multi-instrumentalist focusing on fiddle and mandolin. He played ragtime, bluegrass, Cajun, rock and country , and is best remembered for his work in country flavored work with the Byrds, The Flying Burrito Brothers, and Gram Parsons.

Berline began learning fiddle at the age of five, and in his early twenties recorded with the Dillards and turned down a job in Bill Monroe’s band.  One of his first big breaks came when he played on the Rolling Stones’ “Country Honk” and the Let It Bleed album. In 1971, he joined the Flying Burrito Brothers, followed by stints in Manassas, Country Gazette, and recording with Bob Dylan, The Byrds, The Band, The Eagles, and other artists who you’ll hear from on the podcast. 

In 1995, Berline moved to Guthrie, Oklahoma and opened a fiddle shop which held famous jam sessions upstairs over the shop. He later founded the Oklahoma International Bluegrass Festival . Byron Berline died in 2021 at the age of 77, due to complications of a stroke in Oklahoma, City. He was more than just a bluegrass musician, as you will hear as we remember Byron Berline.
