Trilogy in Theory episodes

  • Ep. 131 - The Reconstruction of William Zero (Dead Ringers vs. Enemy)

On this episode we are joined by Howard Gorman of Cinema Chords to talk with Dan Bush, writer/director of the new film THE RECONSTRUCTION OF WILLIAM ZERO. This new release inspired a look back at two older films with twins plotting against each other in DEAD RINGERS and ENEMY. And in true Bad Twin fashion, we give in to our darker impulses and briefly (BRIEFLY) mention the Ant-Man trailer, objectify men, and end up at ROAD HOUSE as we always do.

  • Ep. 130 - Candlestick (Strangers on a Train vs. Dial M for Murder)

On this episode we plot the perfect Hitchcockian murder with writer/director Christopher Presswell and talk about his homage to those films with his new movie, CANDLESTICK. This inspires a look back at two of The Master’s works where a perfect murder is planned with the added benefit of other parties helping to do the dirty work. Those two older films are STRANGERS ON A TRAIN vs. DIAL M FOR MURDER. Emily Mackay of Movies N' Mayhem joins me to debate those great works of art, and of course, another round of Movie Star Hot or Not.

  • Ep. 129 - Furious 7 (Joy Ride vs. The Italian Job)

On this episode we have fast and furious taste of revenge as the seventh entry in that franchise, FURIOUS 7, brings back the older brother of the previous film’s villain to wreck havoc on our muscled out band of heroes and their muscle cars, which inspired us NOT to get in shape or go to a car show, but to instead watch 2001’s JOY RIDE where a prank leads to a deranged truck driver getting his revenge on Paul Walker and Steve Zahn, and 2003’s THE ITALIAN JOB where Mark Wahlberg and Charlize Theron deliver some payback to their former team member Edward Norton for double crossing them.

  • Ep. 128 - A Most Violent Year (Arbitrage vs. Locke)

On this episode we debate how a silver fox and a handsome bear handle their professional and personal affairs in a very short and stressful period of time with Richard Gere in 2012’s ARBITRAGE vs. Tom Hardy in 2014’s LOCKE. This battle of businessmen trying to do the right or wrong thing was inspired by the new video release of A MOST VIOLENT YEAR, starring Oscar Isaac and Jessica Chastain, and ultimately you know that it's going to be The Chastain that wins out.

  • Ep. 127 - Spring (Cat People vs. Ginger Snaps)

Last episode we was a triple feature of men hunting or being hunted by bears with THE BEAR going up against THE EDGE, inspired by new horror film BACKCOUNTRY. On this episode we are inspired by another new horror movie in SPRING which has us looking back at 1982’s CAT PEOPLE and 2000’s GINGER SNAPS for other cinematic female transformations to furry creatures. But before we get into that, host Chris Maynard participated in a joint interview with Howard Gorman of Cinema Chords and Scream magazine to talk to the directors of SPRING, Justin Benson and Aaron Moorhead.

  • Ep. 126 - Backcountry (The Bear vs. The Edge)

Last episode we were on the search for our masculinity with a triple feature of MY OWN MAN, THE GRADUATE and FIGHT CLUB and since that didn’t do the trick, on this episode we continue to challenge our manhood, but only through a film experience with THE BEAR taking on THE EDGE. This decision to fight a bear and in this case two bear films fighting each other for our movie amusement has been inspired by the new horror film BACKCOUNTRY. Our own Chris Maynard was a part of a press junket where he got to talk with the film’s writer and director, Adam MacDonald.

  • Ep. 125 - My Own Man (The Graduate vs. Fight Club)

On this episode the new Netflix documentary MY OWN MAN has us questioning our own manhood and the only answers we could find were by looking to our elders in cinema with 1967’s THE GRADUATE taking on 1999’s FIGHT CLUB. Hopefully Mrs. Robinson and Tyler Durden can drag us kicking and screaming into manhood, but before that, host Chris Maynard spoke with director David Sampliner about masculinity and his great new documentary film MY OWN MAN.

  • Ep. 124 - Life Itself (Finding Vivian Maier vs. Actress)

On this episode we celebrate an idol to everyone on this podcast in Roger Ebert and the documentary format he championed, by discussing LIFE ITSELF, which is new to Netflix streaming. This is another big episode as the two older films aren’t that old (both are documentary films from 2014) with FINDING VIVIAN MAIER vs. ACTRESS as we explore life in front of and behind the camera. Also as an extra bonus after our debate, we have an interview with the director of ACTRESS, Robert Greene.

  • Ep. 123 - It Follows (Wings of Desire vs. Following)

On this episode we follow the first 2015 critical sensation IT FOLLOWS with two films that aren’t very much like IT FOLLOWS but have a following theme in WINGS OF DESIRE vs. FOLLOWING and are members of The Criterion Collection. But as you will see in our reviews of these three films, the new horror movie is by far the most deserving of that status.

We also shamelessly plug our website http://www.followingfilms.com/

  • Ep. 122 - Faults (Martha Marcy May Marlene vs. Sound of My Voice)

On this episode we join up with three different cults, two are old hat at this point, both Sundance darlings of 2011 in MARTHA MARCY MAY MARLENE and SOUND OF MY VOICE. This extreme podcasting decision was made with the controlling guidance of new release FAULTS. But before we fully commit to this cult movie decision we try the Kool-Aid of Netflix's new original series UNBREAKABLE KIMMY SCHMIDT and let Tangible Teddy gripe about the death of video stores.
