Being hungry and thirsty for righteousness is a spiritual hunger that is the opposite of self-righteousness. It speaks of those who seek God's righteousness rather than attempting to establish a righteousness of their own.

Gentleness or meekness is the opposite of being out of control. It is not weakness, but supreme self-control empowered by the Holy Spirit.

"Those who mourn" refers to mourning over sin, the godly sorrow that produces repentance leading to salvation without regret.

"Poor in spirit" is the opposite of self-sufficiency. This speaks of the deep humility of recognizing one's utter spiritual bankruptcy apart from God.

The deity and humanity of Jesus Christ and the nature of His kingdom are clearly predicted.

As the sinless Son of God, Jesus' victory over temptation by relying on God the Father provides the basis and pattern for our own victory over sin and Satan.

Entering the kingdom of heaven requires repenting of sin and trusting in the Son whom God has sent for sinners.
