We had heard the story a number of times. Disciples are in the upper room, then something happens, then they go preach, and cool stuff happens. We will listen to this story once again on Pentecost, as I share a chunk of this powerful story about the birth of the church from memory.

When we think of leadership, we think of a person who stands in front of a group, who makes all the big decisions, and who wields a great deal of power over those they follow. This is not what leadership looks like for Jesus; instead to lead we must learn to humbly serve others.

Ministry Recognition Sunday

Jesus calls those who follow him to take care of his sheep, and to care for those who are hurting. To care for God’s sheep is not easy. Are we willing to go and do what Jesus calls us to do when we are called to love those it is hard to love? What about when loving people is uncomfortable, challenging, inconvenient?

The disciples saw the impossible become possible as they followed Jesus. Jesus reminds them that we have a responsibility to tell others about what we have seen and experienced of God. Our witness is not a collection of logical statements, but a story of how we have experienced God at work in the world.

On Easter morning something happened that changed the course of history. It was not just those who believed in Jesus who noticed the significance of the event, but all who were nearby.

It was time; the Messiah was going to finally show his true colors. People could finally find out what Jesus was all about. The stage was set, all the people were in place, and the crowd waited with expectation to find out exactly who this Jesus was, and what his ministry and legacy would be.
