Matthew records the first of Jesus' five great discourses here with the Sermon on the Mount containing what we call The Beautitudes.

Jesus accomplished what Adam did not, which Israel did not, and which we do not.  This passage puts on display the active obedience of Christ.  He not only serves as the perfect example in resisting temptation, but He resists temptation for us.

All three persons of the Godhead are present and active at the baptism of Jesus.  This passage is not only about the commissioning of Jesus for His mission but also about the doctrine of the Trinity.
