When Scripture calls Jesus the "cornerstone" it means that only he, nothing and no one else, can bear the weight of our souls' every need. Look for salvation -- rescue from sin, and true meaning for life -- in no one else! Jesus is for you!

It can be easy to identify Christianity with its current cultural expressions (cross necklaces, certain mannerisms, etc.), but at the heart of our relationship with God is nothing more and nothing less than the pronouncement of freedom from our sins in Jesus' name. This message has a way of drawing people together and transcending our differences. In Acts chapter 2 we see brand new converts demonstrate the core of Christianity: hearts celebrating the gospel, and loving each other. Let's do the same!

It hurts to admit where you've fallen short. In fact, we spend a lot of time coming up with defenses to protect ourselves from admitting our flaws. But Jesus comes to us (through the preaching of Peter and the Apostles) in love and forgiveness. The very one we've sinned against embraces us in love. In fact, Peter preaches the amazing truth that the Triune God - Father, Son, and Holy Spirit - planned to respond to your failure and sin with grace and forgiveness. The benefits of this great exchange are given through the gospel, as the Holy Spirit plants life, forgiveness, and freedom from guilt in you heart. This gospel and gift of the Holy Spirit is dispensed whenever God's goodness is preached and his sacraments administered! 

The other lessons appointed for this Sunday were Luke 24:13–35, 1 Peter 1:17–21, and Psalm 116

When Jesus' body lay in the tomb, his opponents thought they had won. Imagine their dismay when Jesus came back! But with his resurrection, Jesus didn't just prove his earthly detractors wrong, he actually defeated Death and Hell itself, and fulfilled the hopes expressed by King David in the Psalms -- and all believers of all time! Jesus defeated death -- YOUR Jesus. And so all of your hopes are fulfilled in him.

He is your defense, and your never-ending source of life and comfort. Come back again and again to this well of salvation, and live each day in the joy of a love that will never run dry -- because Christ is RISEN!

Jesus had every right to claim glory, yet chose the path of humility: serving people, loving them, helping them. Because he chose submitted himself to humiliating service --even suffering on a cross!-- your status as a forgiven child of God is secure. You can live, and serve, as on who has nothing to prove to anybody -- because you've already gained it all in Jesus.
