How do you learn? By listening? By being shown how to do something? In the beginning of John, he not only tells us about Jesus, but SHOWS us what exactly his birth means to us, and how it leads to our own Rebirth, giving us the ability to become one with God again and have the confidence of his love and forgiveness.

Merry Christmas from all of us here at Trinity. 

1 In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God.2 He was with God in the beginning. 3 Through him all things were made; without him nothing was made that has been made. 4 In him was life, and that life was the light of all mankind. 5 The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.

6 There was a man sent from God whose name was John. 7 He came as a witness to testify concerning that light, so that through him all might believe. 8 He himself was not the light; he came only as a witness to the light.

9 The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. 10 He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.11 He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. 12 Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— 13 children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

14 The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory,the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.

Pastor Cherney talks about if and when it's okay to not be okay. The Israelites were not okay during Micah's time, but they THOUGHT they were, and that was dangerous! Their justice system was corrupt, and they looked endlessly for people who would tell them it was okay that they were doing things against God's command.

Micah's message: Jesus came BECAUSE we aren't okay, he came to MAKE us okay. He can handle it!

Thank you for listening to this, our final midweek Advent service. Tonight, we continue our exploration of the angel visits! When the angels appeared to the shepherds, they were filled with fear. They were TERRIFIED! Pastor explores different types of fear, and how the shepherds felt all of those things. The angels ease their fears with the words, "Do not be afraid!" and tells them the good news of Jesus' birth. Listen in to see the amazing comfort we have in God taking away our fears and replacing them with JOY!

Luke 2:8-15
8 And there were shepherds living out in the fields nearby, keeping watch over their flocks at night. 9 An angel of the Lord appeared to them, and the glory of the Lord shone around them, and they were terrified. 10 But the angel said to them, “Do not be afraid. I bring you good news that will cause great joy for all the people. 11 Today in the town of David a Savior has been born to you; he is the Messiah, the Lord. 12 This will be a sign to you: You will find a baby wrapped in cloths and lying in a manger.”

13 Suddenly a great company of the heavenly host appeared with the angel, praising God and saying,

14 “Glory to God in the highest heaven,
    and on earth peace to those on whom his favor rests.”

15 When the angels had left them and gone into heaven, the shepherds said to one another, “Let’s go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has happened, which the Lord has told us about.”

Good morning! Thanks for listening today!
In our families, we all have obligations. We are obligated to go to Thanksgiving or Christmas, even if we aren't excited about it.
What about our relationship with God? Are we doing things out of obligation? Do we think we are being good Christians if we simply show up to church on Sunday or try to be a "good" person?
The problem with that is that God is eternal, wise, and he can see straight into our hearts! He knows if you came to church because of obligation or not.
Our relationship with God is not defined by obligations. It's defined by HIS strength, love, and grace, and what he has done for you by sending his only Son to die for our sins. He DELIGHTS in YOU! So we are not here Sunday morning, or praying and reading the Bible at home out of obligation, but out of LOVE - to express our love for him.

Tonight we hear about the angel appearing to Joseph. After finding out she was pregnant, Joseph was feeling pretty sure that Mary had been unfaithful. Instead of planning revenge or publicly disgracing her, he was going to quietly divorce her. The angel came and told Joseph what was really going on, and it was a great reminder of God's love and faithfulness, and it gave Joseph the confidence to stay with Mary and rejoice with her in the miracle that was Jesus.

If you can, open up to Psalm 139 and read it before bed tonight. Be reminded that God is always with you. This is not something to fear, but to rejoice in! 

Matthew 1:18-25
18 This is how the birth of Jesus the Messiah came about: His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, but before they came together, she was found to be pregnant through the Holy Spirit. 19 Because Joseph her husband was faithful to the law, and yet did not want to expose her to public disgrace, he had in mind to divorceher quietly.

20 But after he had considered this, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dreamand said, “Joseph son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary home as your wife, because what is conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit. 21 She will give birth to a son, and you are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins.”

22 All this took place to fulfill what the Lord had said through the prophet: 23 “The virgin will conceive and give birth to a son, and they will call him Immanuel” (which means “God with us”).

24 When Joseph woke up, he did what the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took Mary home as his wife. 25 But he did not consummate their marriage until she gave birth to a son. And he gave him the name Jesus.

We are all busy getting ready for Christmas. Whether you are one who gets ready in November or someone who waits till the last minute, we are all preparing. What if you didn't know when Christmas would come? When company would show up at your door? We would be ready as soon as possible, with that uncertainty! 

What is the meaning of Christmas? In the church, it's all about Jesus coming. And he isn't just coming as a cute baby in a manger. His coming is signaling his judgement. He will show justice, a fair measuring of our sins. Can we tip the scales in our favor? Of course not. We could never do enough good to balance that scale. But, luckily for us, Jesus came, and HE levels that scale for us. HE came and died for all of our sins, making us able to have eternal life in heaven. And... he WILL NOT CHANGE. This is not a promise we need to worry he will go back on. He came and now we know that we are forgiven forever. 

Malachi 3:1-7b
“I will send my messenger, who will prepare the way before me. Then suddenly the Lord you are seeking will come to his temple; the messenger of the covenant, whom you desire, will come,” says the Lord Almighty.

2 But who can endure the day of his coming? Who can stand when he appears? For he will be like a refiner’s fire or a launderer’s soap. 3 He will sit as a refiner and purifier of silver; he will purify the Levites and refine them like gold and silver. Then the Lord will have men who will bring offerings in righteousness, 4 and the offerings of Judah and Jerusalem will be acceptable to the Lord, as in days gone by, as in former years.

5 “So I will come to put you on trial. I will be quick to testify against sorcerers,adulterers and perjurers, against those who defraud laborers of their wages, who oppress the widows and the fatherless, and deprive the foreigners among you of justice, but do not fear me,” says the Lord Almighty.

6 “I the Lord do not change. So you, the descendants of Jacob, are not destroyed.7 Ever since the time of your ancestors you have turned away from my decrees and have not kept them. Return to me, and I will return to you,” says the Lord Almighty.

Good evening! We are excited to embark on a series of midweek services this advent season that focus on different visits by angels in the time before the birth of Jesus. Tonight we hear about Gabriel visiting Mary.

Mary was human, just like the rest of us, and she was from a small town, too. She was not expecting an extraordinary life, but she sure got one. Gabriel greets her, saying she is highly favored! She didn't FEEL highly favored! But she took his message, absorbed it, and said she was the Lord's servant.

God orchestrated several "impossible" births, giving women children who were otherwise too old or barren: Issac, Joseph and Samuel, for example. But all of those women had a husband. THIS birth is different. She was a virgin! A truly impossible occurrence. And yet, she was pregnant with our Savior. Listen in to see how God shows his love for us, HIS children. 

26 In the sixth month of Elizabeth’s pregnancy, God sent the angel Gabriel to Nazareth,a town in Galilee, 27 to a virgin pledged to be married to a man named Joseph, a descendant of David. The virgin’s name was Mary. 28 The angel went to her and said, “Greetings, you who are highly favored! The Lord is with you.”

29 Mary was greatly troubled at his words and wondered what kind of greeting this might be. 30 But the angel said to her, “Do not be afraid, Mary; you have found favor with God. 31 You will conceive and give birth to a son, and you are to call him Jesus.32 He will be great and will be called the Son of the Most High. The Lord God will give him the throne of his father David, 33 and he will reign over Jacob’s descendants forever; his kingdom will never end.”

34 “How will this be,” Mary asked the angel, “since I am a virgin?”

35 The angel answered, “The Holy Spirit will come on you, and the power of the Most High will overshadow you. So the holy one to be born will be called the Son of God.36 Even Elizabeth your relative is going to have a child in her old age, and she who was said to be unable to conceive is in her sixth month. 37 For no word from God will ever fail.”

38 “I am the Lord’s servant,” Mary answered. “May your word to me be fulfilled.” Then the angel left her.

Thanks for listening today! We are blessed to start yet another year of Advent, which is a time of preparation before Christmas. It is a wonderful time to remember what Christmas is really all about, and focus on Christ and the salvation won for us by him on the cross.

In today's sermon, Pastor Cherney talks about reaping what we sow. Normally, if you put a rose bush in the ground, you expect it to grow roses. But, truly, WE don't make the roses grow. We provide a good environment, but God makes the roses grow. Likewise, WE do not grow our own righteousness, but our righteousness is sown for us by God, and it grows because of Jesus.

We were blessed with a guest preacher tonight, Professor Kenneth Cherney.

Pastor Cherney talks about the Israelites giving their first fruits to the Lord, and how it was more than a basket of fruit, but it stood for a promise kept. The Lord promised the Israelites that he would alway be with them, and never forsake them, and he kept that promise!

As you gather with your friends or family this Thanksgiving, take a moment to look around and rejoice in all that the Lord has given you: good food, loved ones, a roof over your head, and most of all, faith in your heart. And just as the Israelites did, also think of those that aren't with you, and those that aren't like you. They thought of the Levites and foreigners in the land and how they could help those who had nothing. Let us do the same and find ways to help those around us!

Deuteronomy 26:1-11 When you have entered the land the Lord your God is giving you as an inheritance and have taken possession of it and settled in it, 2 take some of the firstfruits of all that you produce from the soil of the land the Lord your God is giving you and put them in a basket. Then go to the place the Lord your God will choose as a dwelling for his Name3 and say to the priest in office at the time, “I declare today to the Lord your God that I have come to the land the Lord swore to our ancestors to give us.” 4 The priest shall take the basket from your hands and set it down in front of the altar of the Lord your God. 5 Then you shall declare before the Lord your God: “My father was a wanderingAramean, and he went down into Egypt with a few people and lived there and became a great nation, powerful and numerous. 6 But the Egyptians mistreated us and made us suffer, subjecting us to harsh labor. 7 Then we cried out to the Lord, the God of our ancestors, and the Lord heard our voice and saw our misery, toil and oppression. 8 So the Lord brought us out of Egypt with a mighty hand and an outstretched arm, with great terror and with signs and wonders. 9 He brought us to this place and gave us this land, a land flowing with milk and honey; 10 and now I bring the firstfruits of the soil that you, Lord, have given me.” Place the basket before the Lord your God and bow down before him. 11 Then you and the Levites and the foreigners residing among you shall rejoice in all the good things the Lord your God has given to you and your household.

Thanks for joining us today! In today's sermon, Pastor Cherney helps us dig deep into what the last phrase of the Lord's Prayer actually means and how we feel about it:

Yours is the kingdom and the power and the glory, forever and ever. Amen.

If we really think about it, this may make us a little uncomfortable, because it takes away any control we have in this life. We like supporters. Cheerleaders. People who don't demand too much from us. Well, in today's reading from Daniel, Daniel writes of a vision. The Israelites were captive for 100s of years... Under the Babylonians, the Persians, then Greece and Rome were in control over them. His vision showed him someone LIKE HIM coming down on clouds. He wasn't another beast that Daniel and the people couldn't understand. It was JESUS, who was THE son of man! And his kingdom will NEVER end.

So do we fret about the control that God has? No, we relish in it. WE are his kingdom. The church is not four walls and a roof, but we, his believers, whose hearts  have been conquered by his love. 


Daniel 7:13,14
13 “In my vision at night I looked, and there before me was one like a son of man, coming with the clouds of heaven. He approached the Ancient of Days and was led into his presence. 14 He was given authority, glory and sovereign power; all nations and peoples of every language worshiped him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion that will not pass away, and his kingdom is one that will never be destroyed.
