This Lent Season we are talking about healing the flaws, schisms and tears within us.

Week 1- How do we heal our inner flaws and become a more whole person, as God intended us to be.
Week 2 - How prayer helps us to heal.
Week 3 - Can we always be the same person? Am I consistent in who God has made me to be? Or do I act differently, depending on the situation?

God wants to help us get free from those things that have harmed us.
The God we follow is incarnate. He walked on the earth and interacted with us in many different circumstances and he was always the same; fully God and fully human. We sometimes have challenges that keep us from being ourselves, and being who God has made us to be.

How do we be the body of Christ? How can we care for the earth, its creatures, and our neighbors?

From our gospel in Matthew 23:
Then Jesus said to the crowds and to his disciples, “The scribes and the Pharisees sit on Moses’ seat; therefore, do whatever they teach you and follow it; but do not do as they do, for they do not practice what they teach. They tie up heavy burdens, hard to bear, and lay them on the shoulders of others; but they themselves are unwilling to lift a finger to move them. They do all their deeds to be seen by others; for they make their phylacteries broad and their fringes long. They love to have the place of honor at banquets and the best seats in the synagogues, and to be greeted with respect in the marketplaces, and to have people call them rabbi.

But you are not to be called rabbi, for you have one teacher, and you are all students. And call no one your father on earth, for you have one Father—the one in heaven. Nor are you to be called instructors, for you have one instructor, the Messiah. The greatest among you will be your servant. All who exalt themselves will be humbled, and all who humble themselves will be exalted.

“But woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you lock people out of the kingdom of heaven. For you do not go in yourselves, and when others are going in, you stop them. Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you cross sea and land to make a single convert, and you make the new convert twice as much a child of hell as yourselves.

How can we simply be who God has called us to be, day by day, moment by moment?

We pray that you would know the goodness of God, revealed to us in Christ Jesus.

Lent: Start at the Inner

This Lent Season we are talking about healing the flaws, schisms and tears within us.

Week 1- How do we heal our inner flaws and become a more whole person, as God intended us to be.

This week Tim takes a fascinating look at Lent and what it means for us.
In Lent we start at the "inner" parts of ourselves, we break the cycles that tear us, harm us, and fracture us. We stop the cycles that keep us from being connected to God, to loving others, and to connecting with creation. We stop those cycles of anger, of doubt, of addiction, or shame, or social media, or whatever cycle or distraction they may be that can be pulling us apart or keeping us from being whole. It's about growing a healthy core inner self, that God has given you, so that you can live from a place of love, and be the wonderful person God has made you to be; in body, mind, and spirit.

Are we able to let Jesus be "that mystery"?
The Nicene Creed shows us a God who is big enough to be "God" and who is "close" enough that it matters.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father; through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified, who has spoken through the prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one Baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come.
Amen.

The Presentation:
This Child is Laid Down in the Temple

The Presentation of Christ in the Temple
Within ourselves and within our society, we desire to find a way to live in a more beautiful way, in the way of Jesus. In Jewish law, 40 days after birth, a first born son was to be taken to the temple to be presented before the priests and dedicated to the Lord.

There are two clues that give us insight into this special moment and day as Simeon is drawn by the Spirit of God to come to the Temple to witness Jesus being presented.

As Simeon speaks to Mary he says, "This child is laid down for the falling and the rising of many in Israel...and a sword will pierce your own soul too."

In an astonishing moment, Simeon sees that the Firstborn of All Creation is going to be laid down for the falling and the rising of many...

Join us as Tim breaks down this powerful story in the early life of Jesus and his parents.

From our scripture today in Luke:
Now there was a man in Jerusalem whose name was Simeon; this man was righteous and devout, looking forward to the consolation of Israel, and the Holy Spirit rested on him. It had been revealed to him by the Holy Spirit that he would not see death before he had seen the Lord’s Messiah. Guided by the Spirit, Simeon came into the temple; and when the parents brought in the child Jesus, to do for him what was customary under the law, Simeon took him in his arms and praised God, saying,

‘Master, now you are dismissing your servant in peace,
     according to your word;
 for my eyes have seen your salvation,
     which you have prepared in the presence of all peoples,
 a light for revelation to the Gentiles
     and for glory to your people Israel.’

And the child’s father and mother were amazed at what was being said about him. Then Simeon blessed them and said to his mother Mary, ‘This child is laid down for the falling and the rising of many in Israel, and to be a sign that will be opposed so that the inner thoughts of many will be revealed—and a sword will pierce your own soul too.’

There was also a prophet, Anna the daughter of Phanuel, of the tribe of Asher. She was of a great age, having lived with her husband for seven years after her marriage, then as a widow to the age of eighty-four. She never left the temple but worshipped there with fasting and prayer night and day. At that moment she came, and began to praise God and to speak about the child to all who were looking for the redemption of Jerusalem.

Jesus: Miracles or Magic? Part 3 - Loaves and Fishes

This Epiphany Season (Epiphany Tide) we continue our look at the glory of Jesus, as his works, his miracles, and his ministry begin to come alive and the news spreads throughout the land because of the wonders Jesus is doing

We continue asking the questions:
How is glory achieved? Self acclamation?
Are miracles done by breaking the limits of creation?
Is glory achieved by rising above those limits?

Magic is for convenience, but a miracle is a moment that shows the deep love of God, meeting people's deepest needs. A miracle shows who God is, bringing His kingdom into the present moment.

How is Jesus' "glory" being shown here? 
Glory is the result of paying the cost of love.

In today's sermon Trevor explores another miracle of Jesus, the miracle of the loaves and the fishes.
From the gospel of Mark:
'...They said to him, “Are we to go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread, and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves have you? Go and see.” When they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.” 

Then he ordered them to get all the people to sit down in groups on the green grass. So they sat down in groups of hundreds and of fifties. Taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven, and blessed and broke the loaves, and gave them to his disciples to set before the people; and he divided the two fish among them all. 

And all ate and were filled; and they took up twelve baskets full of broken pieces and of the fish. Those who had eaten the loaves numbered five thousand men.'

As we look at today's miracle from the gospel of Mark, the story of the 5 loaves and 2 fish and feeding the 5000.

From the gospel of Matthew:
Jesus said to him, “...go to the sea and cast a hook; take the first fish that comes up; and when you open its mouth, you will find a coin; take that and give it to them for you and me." Throughout history there have been "messages in bottles" or items found in the bellies of fish, but it's spectacularly different when you know a coin is there and you send your friend to cast his line into the sea to pull out the fish with the coin in it.
