In ancient Israel, a leprous person was ostracized from society. Even family members avoided them, fearing infection. When such a person approached Jesus seeking healing, He did the unthinkable. Instead of withdrawing, He showed compassion and touched him, restoring him. Our sins are even more repulsive, yet Jesus shows us mercy and heals us by taking our place on the cross, the place of a leprous man. Such is the love of Christ for sinners.

Jesus loved to pray. No matter how long and tiring his day was, he woke up early in the morning and prayed in a solitary place. In the seventh and final antiphon, we consider the title of Jesus Christ, O Emmanuel, meaning “God with us.” For us to truly appreciate what it means for God to be with us, we need to understand the distance between humanity and God, as his very nature sets him apart from us. However, God chooses to descend to earth through the person of Jesus Christ in order to save us from sin and dwell with us eternally.

In the sixth antiphon, we address Jesus Christ by the title 'O Rex Gentium' or King of the Nations. Jesus, the maker of man, rules over all of mankind by virtue of creation. The hope of Israel that God is the king of the nations is fulfilled when Jesus is born as the child of Abraham to bring God’s blessing of salvation to the nations! To call Jesus the King of the Nations means that He is the Reward and Reconciler of all nations.

In the fifth antiphon, the church addresses Jesus Christ as O Oriens, which is translated into English in many ways such as Morning Star, Rising Sun, Radiant Dawn or Dayspring. Since the fall, mankind has always yearned for the true light of God to arise and dispel the darkness. The day of Christ brought the dawn of deliverance for people living in the darkness, and though the Light shines in the darkness, the full glory of the dayspring is not yet revealed to us! We in the church look forward to this glorious future much like Israel of old.

In the fourth antiphon, we are introduced to Christ as the Key of David, referring to the authority, amnesty and assurance of the King. Jesus continues to assure us through the word of the Gospel that he who is the Key of David has opened wide for us the gate to heaven. In this sermon, we consider what this messianic title from the book of Isaiah means and how Jesus fulfils it, even today.

The people of God had waited years for the tree of Jesse to be revived and replenished. After centuries of deadness, new life sprouts forth miraculously as God himself now comes to his people in the person of Jesus. But Jesus Christ is not only the shoot of Jesse but also the root (Radix) of Jesse, fulfilling what the prophet Isaiah said 700 years before. In this sermon, we see what this implies, and how we can be part of the tree of Jesse, producing fruit for the glory of God.

The search for wisdom (sapientia) spans the human experience across time because we are created to seek wisdom. In seeking after wisdom, mankind is seeking Him who is the source of all wisdom – the only wise God. However, since the fall, the children of Adam and Eve have embraced the foolish ways of sin and have sought wisdom apart from God. Christ alone is the fulfilment for the human yearning for wisdom.
