But the humble King they would encounter would transform their lives, and being filled with joy, they worship Him. Many of us, too, seek the truth in such ways, often for the wrong reasons. The life of Joseph, the earthly father of Jesus, teaches us that God requires quiet obedience from his people. The Gospels do not record a single utterance from Joseph, but we see that he spoke through his actions. Joseph realised that God's plan of redemption was far above anything he could imagine, so he submitted to the will of God and was, as a humble carpenter, prepared to raise a King.

The legacy of Othniel — the first Judge in the book of Judges — is often overlooked. He was God’s mighty lion who waged war against Cushan-rishathaim and delivered his people from their oppression.

The new generation of Israelites — which came after the brave and victorious generation that entered Canaan — had an intellectual knowledge of God in their head, but they did not know him in their hearts. They embraced their wayward loves and forsook their God only to find their lives falling apart.

The Israelites in the early chapters of Judges are seen to be accomodating the Canaanites among them, in a clear defiance of God's mandate to Israel. Instead of becoming the land of the people of God, the Israelites become a people of the land.
