The people of God are running a marathon of faith and finally, after many long miles, the finish line is coming into view. The Messiah is in their midst at last. Ancient themes and promises are converging at this point in history, showing that Jesus is the fulfillment of all that had come before.

This pattern of humiliation and exultation represents Mary's story and consistently runs through scripture. We are called to contemplate Christ's humiliation and to look forward to his exalted return.

Paul sets himself forward as the apostolic example for elders. We see in scripture a consistent call to both lead and follow. Ultimately, the Christian community is to be a cascade of exemplary service, from Christ to his ordained leaders and on into the universal church.
