  • BALLS After Dark.142 It might be a 2na (IT'S NAAHHT A 2NA)
Has the Doc mentioned he was in Europe, both kinds of music, 2na fishing, buoyancy, up to Scratch, banging on things, shades of Gray, falling asleep on a mountain bike, Australian Skeptacs, the inside of Bon Scott's head, live performance videos, getting the Rubens and Bad Dreems confused, reclaiming sleaze, Also Riffs and getting ghosted. This week Beeso and the Doc reviewed new albums from Cut Chemist, Ben Howard and the Nextmen/Gentleman's Dub Club; the classics were the original Australian versions of AC/DC's T.N.T. and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap. Next week: Thunderpussy, Welles and the Specials (1979). All our current and recent review albums are on our After Dark album review playlist (new stuff added to the end) while our favourite tracks of the year from albums we've reviewed are on our 2018 After Dark Mixtape. BALLS and After Dark are also available here: https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/balls-with-beeso-dr-yobbo/id1209722376.

  • BALLS.162 Moneyball don't lie: T20 analytics with Jarrod Kimber
Beeso is joined by special guest Jarrod Kimber of ESPNcricinfo to explore one of our favourite discussion topics on the pod, the advent of next-generation analytics in 'traditional' sports, and how this transforms coaching and front-office decisions. Like baseball, the prototypical next-gen analytics sport (being responsible for giving the world fantasy sports, sabermetrics and Moneyball), cricket is a series of 1-v-1 contests with definable outcomes - so it should be very amenable to a big data revolution. But what is that data, is it the right data, what kind of questions are being asked with it, and are the answers being listened to? Aside from being our favourite example of intelligent, insightful Australian sportswriting in a local media ecosystem of Mostly Not That, in the last few years Jarrod has led the discussion around the rise of analytics in cricket, particularly on the franchise-led, business-over-blazers T20 side of the game. As he discusses with Beeso, not only has it pulled cricket at large into a fascinating philosophical conflict between traditional and analytical (and between club and country), and led us to reconsider our received wisdom about many facets of the game, it's led him to somewhat of a personal career crossroads. You can read Jarrod's invariably bloody excellent writing on ESPNcricinfo and learn more about his sports writing course on his personal website Dystopian Northern Suburbs. Let's Gone St Lucia Stars.

  • BALLS After Dark.141 Men At Wonk
Dropped catchphrases, two white guys trying to do a radio show, putting in wonk, some of Tony Martin's best work, He Got Healthy, the importance of being less earnest than Car Seat Headrest, Map Of The Problematic, disavowing yourself, lazy beats, Kath & Kim had bars tho, our contractually obligated Simpsons reference for this episode, playlist inception, audible pounding, all in the name of liberty and Instatourism with Doc. This week new albums from Seattle's Naked Giants, Londonium's Wonk Unit and a 2003 Oz hiphop classic from Bias B. The After Dark review show is off for a couple of weeks so next ep will feature a bonus-sized swag of new albums from J5 alum Cut Chemist, indie folkwit Ben Howard and hard hittin' new Britain collab Pound For Pound featuring the Nextmen vs Gentlemen's Dub Club; while for the classic, we're facing-off the best of Bon Scott era AC/DC: T.N.T. and Dirty Deeds Done Dirt Cheap (the original Australian releases, of course.) All our current and recent review albums are on our After Dark album review playlist (new stuff added to the end) while our favourite tracks of the year from albums we've reviewed are on our 2018 After Dark Mixtape. BALLS and After Dark are also available here: https://itunes.apple.com/au/podcast/balls-with-beeso-dr-yobbo/id1209722376.
