Maren wohnt in Berlin, sie ist zu diesem Zeitpunkt frisch getrennt, alleinerziehend, und ihre Eltern leben in Stuttgart. Sie holt sie nach Berlin in ein Pflegeheim und schreibt über das, was sie erlebt, ein Buch: „Papa stirbt, Mama auch“ – es ist kein Buch über den Tod, es ist ein Buch über den Weg dahin: über Pflege der Eltern, Verzweiflung, schöne Erinnerungen. Und als der Vater gestorben ist, geht sie einen Schritt, den heute nur noch wenige gehen: Sie hält Totenwache. Drei Tage bleibt sie an der Seite ihres verstorbenen Vaters im Pflegeheim.
