The U.S. government, along with other world governments and health organizations, is closely monitoring H1N1 flu—also known as the swine flu—that was first identified this past spring. This summer, the World Health Organization raised its pandemic alert level to Phase 6, signaling that a global pandemic was under way and on October 24, 2009, President Obama declared a national emergency to deal with the “rapid increase in illness.”
