In 1968, a play about a group of gay men at a birthday party was the toast of New York. Two years later, LGBT people were picketing the theaters where the film version was being shown. A lot happened in those two years, mostly notably the Stonewall riots and the birth of Gay Pride - and ever since, THE BOYS IN THE BAND has been a source of controversy - a queer milestone or a dated and dangerous work of homophobia.
