The show's first season is set in Louisiana and follows a pair of Louisiana State Police homicide detectives—Rustin "Rust" Cohle (McConaughey) and Martin "Marty" Hart (Harrelson)—and their pursuit of a serial killer over the course of seventeen years. True Detective‍‍ '​‍s second season takes place in California, and follows the interweaving stories of several police officers (Farrell, McAdams, and Kitsch) and a criminal-turned-businessman (Vaughn) after the body of a corrupt city manager is found on the side of a highway with occult symbols etched on his chest. Pizzolatto initially conceived the series as a novel, but later, as it began taking definite form
