In this week’s podcast I talk about the need to develop our critical
thinking capabilities so we can better understand the problems we face – both
personally and collectively – and the often well-meaning solutions being
offered by politicians and activist groups.
One of the first questions people ask when they are going through a
spiritual awakening is, “What’s wrong with society?” It’s a way of saying, “How
can I help?” as they move away from being selfish to being altruistic. But
often people stay within the paradigm of finding fault and assigning blame; the
paradigm of victims and oppressors. This worldview is the foundation of many
movements towards social change, whether that’s reparations for slavery,
universal basic income or climate change activism. But this simplistic premise can’t
be a true representation of a complex world. We need to move beyond this notion
if we are to accurately assess the issues and their solutions.
Enlightenment in a spiritual sense is not just about finding inner peace and
connecting to higher consciousness. It is also about using our minds and
aligning with the values of the Enlightenment period in the 18th Century to
overcome our attachment to comforting, dogmatic beliefs. Today, thought
provoking criticism is often censored simply because some find it offensive.
That attitude only leads to stagnation of thought, instead of the free-flow of
ideas. We need to think our way to enlightenment, not hit the snooze button and
hope for the best.
