Welcome to the True Talk Café Podcast S2 Ep. 4 - Beyond What We Can See
                      Show agenda:

                      • Defining Autism?
                      • Guests Questions

                        • Many autistic people have a variety of sometimes exceptional skills, that enable them to thrive in roles ranging from sales assistant to computer programmer, and journalist to statistician, to name a few.  However, autistic people are often disadvantaged when it comes to getting and keeping a job because of other people's lack of understanding and support.  How does recruitment procedures often inadvertently create barriers for autistic people? What adjustments can employers make to remove these barriers?
                          • Interviews - particularly ‘traditional’ conversational type interviews - rely heavily on social and communication skills, so autistic candidates may well struggle to 'sell themselves' in an interview, even if they have all the right skills.  What are some reasonable adjustments that can be made that are essential to allowing autistic candidates to portray their skills and competencies fully?
                          • Working with an autistic person can be an enriching experience for managers and colleagues alike, however support is important to make it successful. So, how can organizations avoid and overcome challenges in order to ensure enjoyable and effective working relationships with an autistic employee from a performance perspective?
                          • Americans on the autism spectrum experience substantial challenges to attaining competitive integrated employment opportunities that match their interests, gifts, and talents. They experience substantial unemployment and underemployment, according to research literature.
Top Tips for working with Autistic Employees:
                            Clarify expectations of the job
                            Provide training and monitoring
Make sure instructions are concise and specific

Ensure the work environment is well-structured

                            Regularly review performance

                            Provide sensitive but direct feedback

                            Ask about sensory distractions

Help other staff to be more aware

                            Summary
In summary, we encourage organizations to create accessible job opportunities and to support candidates to access those opportunities.  By gaining an understanding of autism, you can open up new possibilities for your organization.

                                              Statistics

                                              • For women of color, the climb to be equally represented in leadership roles has been even more laggard. While today’s statistics about women in leadership show improvement from years past, there’s much more work to be done.

                                              • Summary
We’d like to leave you with this.  Disruptive, ambitious women are evidence that compassion, resilience, and confidence can open doors to remarkable success.  We aren’t going to fix all the disparities women face in a day, so we need to keep the conversations going to empower women to chart their own paths to success.

February is Black History Month, which is officially recognized by governments in the U.S. and Canada and observed in Ireland and the U.K.  It focuses our attention on the contributions of Black people as well as teaches us about noteworthy individuals who have helped shape and change our society. The last few years have been particularly historic, and as a result there has been a major push for racial justice for people of color and marginalized populations.

The 1619 Project, by Nikole Hannah-Jones, Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist for The New York Times Magazine, has been a catalyst to change the narrative of the origins of the slave trade in America and how it has shaped what the country would become.
However, Latin America and the Caribbean received 95 percent of the Africans stolen during the trans-Atlantic slave trade. But what does it mean to be a descendent of those Africans today, in a world where more voices are calling out racism in Latin America?

                                                          Show agenda:
                                                          - Defining Afro-Latinx?

                                                          Guests Questions

                                                          • When you think about intersectionality within such a diverse culture, what are some of the challenges you have experienced identifying as Afro-Latino?
                                                            • Often times multi-racial individuals suffer from imposter syndrome or inclusiveness within respective communities.  How have you leveraged your diversity to advance?  Do you think employers have made strides in reducing discrimination?
                                                            • There’s a saying in Spanish, “Ni de aqui, ni de aya?” (Neither from here nor there).  What can we as a society do better to remove those mindsets?
                                                            • Summarize Natasha S. Alford's documentary travels to Loiza, Puerto Rio?

                                                              • There are many shades of blackness that reside in Puerto Rico.  Afro-Latinos must love themselves and accept their African roots, to directly challenge anti-blackness.
                                                              • Today, activists encourage Puerto Ricans with visible black heritage to write in black or afro-descendiente on the census.
                                                              • By claiming and counting black populations they hope to usher in change for a new era.

Welcome to the True Talk Café Podcast S2 Ep. 1 - Quiet Quitting Speaks Volumes!
What is ‘quiet quitting’ and where did this concept originate?  While much has been written about the Great Resignation, a new term has emerged to describe an increasingly common alternative to resigning: “quiet quitting.”

According to the Los Angeles Times, the first known use of ‘quiet quitting’ was by Bryan Creely, a Nashville-based corporate recruiter turned career coach, who invoked it in a March 4, 2022, video posted on TikTok and YouTube.
However, it is said to have originated years earlier in 2009 remarks from an economist named Mark Boldger.  Still others trace the concept, though not the term, to China, where a similar workplace phenomenon called ‘lying flat’ appears to have originated about a year earlier.
Who knew this was thing 15 years ago!
                                                                            Show agenda:
                                                                            - What is Quiet Quitting?

                                                                            - Guests Questions

                                                                            • What are your thoughts about ‘quiet quitting’ being a new phenomenon or not? What type of impact has it had on managers and in your opinion do they think it’s a real thing?
                                                                              • Do you think The quiet quitting trend suggests that employees are increasingly feeling that this exchange has become unbalanced: Employers are demanding additional effort from workers without investing in them enough in return?
                                                                              • Do you think managers have been tolerant of ‘quiet quitters’ in part due to this challenge?
                                                                              • What steps can businesses take to address the root causes of quiet quitting?
                                                                              • Quiet Quitter Scenarios?

                                                                                • An administrative assistant identified as Christy G. said, in part, “I do not interact with anything from work before 7:00 or after 4:30, which is the time my office is open. I work in a corporate setting, so my tasks are not life or death. If someone asks for something, like maybe a file scanned or something like that, at the end of the day—it can wait until the next day.  How can a manager identify an employee like Christy and get her re-engaged?

                                                                                  • A department manager identified as Sara M. told NPR that her priorities and values had changed since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic: “I now leave my office at the end of the day not thinking about what I need to work on when I go home at night. I set boundaries for checking my emails and reaching out to co-workers during non-office hours. Most importantly, I do not feel any bit of anxiety when it comes to requesting time off, taking personal days or especially taking sick time.”  What approach would you take to get this manager re-engaged?
                                                                                  • Statistics

                                                                                    • According to a Gallup survey of workers age 18 and older taken in June 2022, “quiet quitters make up at least 50% of the U.S. workforce – probably more.” The percentage is particularly high among workers under age 35.
                                                                                    • Only 32% of workers came across as engaged, while another 18% were disengaged, meaning that they made no secret of their job dissatisfaction.
                                                                                      • The remaining 50% could be classified as quiet quitters, people who were not especially engaged in their work but didn’t broadcast the fact.

What is multi-level marketing (MLM)?  The term marketing (MLM) refers to a strategy used by some direct sales companies to sell products and services. MLM encourages existing members to promote and sell their offerings to other individuals and bring on new recruits into the business. Distributors are paid a percentage of their recruits' sales. New recruits become the distributor's network or downline and are, in turn, encouraged to make sales to earn money.
Although it is legal, multilevel marketing is often controversial. One problem is pyramid schemes that use money from new recruits to pay people at the top rather than those who perform the work. These schemes (and the people behind them) take advantage of others by pretending to be engaged in legitimate multilevel or network marketing. You can spot pyramid schemes by their greater focus on recruitment than on product sales.
                                                                                                    Show agenda:

We can safely make two statements about censorship: first, suppression of ideas and information can occur at any stage or level of publication, distribution or institutional control, making it potentially open to attack by any individual, group, organization at any time for any reason; second, censorship is often arbitrary and irrational. Although, censorship is a violation of the First amendment right to freedom of speech there are limitations making it constitutionally permissible based on “community standards,” to apply.

Most challenges and bans prior to the 1970s including those on traditional texts used in the English classrooms were, on the basis of, obscenity and explicit sexuality. Others for containing heretical, or subversive elements such as the following:

                                                                                                                          • Jules Verne’s Around the World in Eighty Days: “very unfavorable to Mormons”
                                                                                                                          • Nathaniel Hawthorne’s The Scarlet Letter: “a filthy book”
                                                                                                                          • Herman Melville’s Moby-Dick: “contains homosexuality”
                                                                                                                          • Modern works, even more than the classics, are criticized with terms such as “filthy,” “un-American,” “overly realistic,” and “anti-war.”

                                                                                                                            Show agenda:

                                                                                                                            • Guests Questions:
                                                                                                                              1. Some books have been attacked merely for being “controversial,” suggesting that for some people the purpose of education is not the investigation of ideas but rather the indoctrination of a certain set of beliefs and standards. Do you agree with this statement?  Why or Why not?
                                                                                                                              2. Literature about minority, ethnic or racial groups remains “controversial” or “objectionable” to many adults. As long as groups such as African Americans, Pacific Islanders, American Indians, Asian Americans, and Latinxs “kept their proper place”—awarded them by a White society—censors rarely raised their voices. But attacks have increased in frequency as minority groups have refused to observe their assigned “place.” Why do you think minority literary content is perceived in this way?  How has your organization dealt with this specific area of opposition?
                                                                                                                              3. In the opinion of many, books being banned are also books that help readers understand certain topics to a significant extent. When this happens students experience a narrowing of their world view and teachers are tasked with an ever-changing curriculum and fear of personal choice.  Does a strategy of ‘playing it safe’ with literary content put our young people in a position of social disadvantage?
                                                                                                                              4. Survey Result:

                                                                                                                                • This year’s Banned Book Week, Sept. 18-24, took place during an : time of book bans and challenges in U.S. schools.
                                                                                                                                • The subject matter most often banned? Four out of 10 banned books had LGBTQ+ characters or themes. Four out of 10 also had protagonists or characters of color.
                                                                                                                                • Between July 2021 and June 2022, more than 2,500 book bans were enacted in 138 districts in 32 states, resulting in the removal of more than 1,600 titles from school libraries and classrooms that serve roughly 4 million students, according to a report by PEN America. And that’s likely an underestimate, as PEN America compiled only the bans reported to them or covered in the media.
                                                                                                                                • The state with the most bans? Texas with 801.

Most companies have an annual or semi-annual performance review process where managers provide structured feedback to their employees.  While effective in theory, these irregular check-ins can seem like token efforts which yield few tangible results or overall organizational communication.
