In this passage we see the lukewarm church. Jesus has nothing good to say about this church. His command to this church is "repent."

Like Smyrna the Church in Philadelphia did not receive any rebuke from the LORD.

The Church at Smyrna was persecuted, and the Church at Philadelphia was evangelistic.

Jesus does not begin his address to this church with a compliment, but instead He rebukes them. They had a good reputation in man's eyes, but to the LORD they were dead.

To be dead indicates no struggle, no fight, no persecution. A dead body has lost the battle, and the fight seems over. Being dead the church in Sardis presented no threat to Satan's domain. So it wasn't worth attacking.

In spite of the church in a general sense being dead, there was a godly remnant in the church of Sardis. There were some "which had not defiled their garments." Jesus says that "they are worthy." They were worthy, because they had been saved.

In this passage of study we will see the purpose of this book, and that is to reveal Jesus! The main purpose is for us to know Jesus better and to have a closer walk with Him.

In Genesis 1:2 God said..."Let there be light: and there was light." This light appeared before the sun, moon, and stars. The light of God's presence was upon the world and continued to appear in different ways... as a light, fire, cloud, or a combination of these.

In Ezekiel 11 the Glory of God departed from the nation of Israel. The Temple was later destroyed, and the world had to wait in silence for the Glory to return.

Then in God's perfect timing in the city of Nazareth the glory returned in a new form. The Word became became flesh and dwelt among us. (John 1:14)

The same angel who visited Zecharias is now sent from God to Mary. Here we will see another announcement of an even more amazing birth.

Here we see a continuation from where the book of Malachi ended. In this passage we will learn of a certain priest. He was one of 22,000 that served in Jerusalem. This priest Zecharias was chosen by lot to offer incense in the holy place of the temple. There the angel Gabriel appears to him to tell him that God had remembered his prayer, and his prayer will be answered.
