Chiramu is a tradition that is best described as a game of bonding between brothers and sisters-in-law in the Zimbabwean Shona culture. For Farisai, it escalated into the violation of the very essence of her womanhood and all it stands for. Sexually violated by a brother-in-law who should have been looking out for her, Farisai’s life, health, and function in society became a tangled spider’s web, one she struggled to detangle, and the ripple effects were endless.
A near-death car accident was the rude awakening that helped her realise that unless she dealt with the tradition-inflicted secret of her abuse, her whole life would be nothing but a series of damaging, self-sabotaging events that could only be stopped by coming out of the rut that is dogma.
This is a true account of how culture, tradition, and religion play havoc in many African women’s lives.
