As someone who’s never really had any connection to the fashion world, I somehow got lucky — through meeting Akio — to be introduced to three new friends, and had a peek into a world I’d never normally be part of. Akio, based in Milan and spending a short time in New York, has rich experience curating fashion and art projects across Europe, the U.S., and China. Joanna is a designer at Tory Burch in New York — someone who turned her long-time design dream into reality. And Joyce, who works in branding and PR at a jewelry company, sees her team as family, while also pursuing her passion as a fashion photographer across major runways and shows.
In our conversation, we talked about different aesthetic preferences across cultures, the relationship between storytelling and identity, and what it means to maintain authentic self-expression while working in a global fashion landscape. We also discussed how to curate one’s own life and career path, and how to find a dynamic balance between art and commerce. From design to storytelling, from style to identity — this is a dialogue about expression, choice, and self-construction.
