Learn when to use TU and when to say VOUS in French. What is the correct French way to address someone?

Comme vous le savez peut-être, les Français sont très pointilleux sur les formalités. Il est peut-être assez compliqué de savoir quand dire TU – le tutoiement – et quand dire VOUS – le vouvoiement – car les deux se disent de la même façon en anglais.

As you may know, the French are very picky about formalities. It can be a bit delicate to figure out when to use TU and when to use VOUS because both TU and VOUS both mean YOU in English.

Règle de base: en cas de doute, dites VOUS. C’est plus sûr, et vous ne risquez pas de blesser quelqu’un. En attendant, lisez ces consignes pour en avoir une idée.

Rule of thumb: when in doubt, use VOUS. It is safer, and you won’t risk crossing someone. However, go over these guidelines so you get a feel for TU and VOUS.
