This week on #TubtaNabadda, in the lead-up to World Radio Day on 13 February, we discuss a different face of radio – podcasting – and how it has become a source of information and a forum for discussions.

Beginning as an extension of radio broadcasts – and in some cases continuing as such – podcasts have evolved into an independent format, and we talk about podcasts’ appeal, use and potential in Somalia.

Our first guest is Mowlid Haji Abdi, a podcaster, founder and CEO of Horn Broadcasting Network. He explains what a podcast is, their popularity with Somali audiences and how his daily podcasts connect him to his listeners.

Our second guest is Suheyba Mohamed Badqas, a content creator of YouTube channel ‘Suheyba Badqas.’ She tells us about what attracted her to start podcasting, how she selects the topics and how she interacts with her audience.

This week on #TubtaNabadda, we talk about the damaging impact of female genital mutilation (FGM) on Somali women and girls and what must be done to ensure that no girl goes through this suffering.

In the first segment of the programme, we hear from Dr. Maryan Abdullahi, from the Somali Gynaecology/Obstetrics Association and a Gender-Based Violence Consultant with the World Health Organisation (WHO) and the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA). She talks about the immediate health risks and complications faced by women and girls and how health professionals can help prevent FGM.

Our second guest, Dr. Maryan Muse from Somali Community Concern, a UNFPA partner organisation, explains the socio-cultural context of FGM in Somalia and how her organisation engages with parents, traditional midwives, religious leaders and local authorities to end this practice.

This week on #TubtaNabadda, in the wake of the International Day of Education, we highlight the significance of ensuring access to quality education for Somalis as their nation rebuilds from years of conflict and civil strife.

In the opening segment, we will hear from Noor Ali Farah, a sociology lecturer at the University of Somalia, who will be discussing the challenges and opportunities for Somali students to acquire knowledge. These challenges include excessive use of social media for entertainment, lack of public libraries and security issues. Opportunities include self-discipline, the use of social media for education, educated educators and government stability.

In the second segment, we hear from Amina Nur, a social science student at the Somali National University, who discusses challenges students face, including security and resource scarcity, and suggests ways to improve the education system in Somalia to ensure access to high-quality education and better support for students.

This week on #TubtaNabadda, we focus on what it takes to become a young entrepreneur in Somalia, speaking with two young entrepreneurs who operate coffee shops in the Somali capital of Mogadishu, where the pastime of socialising over a cup of tea or coffee has grown thanks to growing stability and security in the city.

In the first segment, we hear from Amira Farah Ahmed, founder of ‘The Social Hub,’ a local coffee shop. She discusses her entrepreneurial journey, obstacles she has encountered, and solutions she has developed; she also shares with us the particular challenges that young women can face when starting small businesses.

In the second segment, we hear from Hassan Mohamed, the manager of ‘Mogadishu Coffee,’ another local establishment. He talks about his plans to expand his coffee shop's social impact, given its role as a space where people can come together to have meaningful conversations and social interactions, through the use of innovative business ideas. He also hopes to expand into all of Somalia’s Federal Member States.

Engaging in sports like swimming can greatly enhance physical and mental health and well-being, particularly for young girls and boys.

In the first segment of the programme, we hear from Fardowsa Mohamud Wehliye, a swimming enthusiast and instructor who started 'Bah-dabaalato' (Swimming Family) to teach young boys and girls swimming and survival skills. She explores cultural misconceptions that might hinder young girls from enjoying the benefits of swimming.

Earlier in December, the winners of the first Human Rights Short Film Competition in Somalia were announced at the National Theatre.

The first guest on the programme is Abdihakim Jimale Adan, the Deputy Minister for Women and Human Rights Development. He spoke about audio-visual creations helping envision a future where dignity and justice are unalienable rights for all.

Our second guest, Ahmed Aweys Hassan, the winning entry producer, narrates why he chose to produce a film that touches on human rights and his motivation to give voice to the voiceless.
