Church growth is not adding Christians from other churches.

Jesus’ Strategy of Fishing for People

1.We need to Know  what and whowe are fishing for.

We must clearly identify who we’re trying to reach.  It takes all kinds of churches to reach all kinds of people.

No Church can reach everybody!

Jesus had a clear evangelistic target:  “I was sent only to the lost sheep of Israel.” Matthew 15:24

Paul had a clear evangelistic target: “I had been entrusted with the task of preaching the gospel to the Gentiles,  just as Peter had been to the Jews.” Galatians 2:7

Jesus gave the disciples a clear evangelistic target:  “Don’t go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans.  Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel.” Matthew 10:5-6

How to Define our target; We need to ask

Geographically:  How many people live in this area?

Demographically: What kind of people live in this area?

Culturally: What are their values, interests and fears? (Best Source – Personal survey)

Spiritually: What do they already know about the gospel?  Determine their religious background.

Fact: All unchurched people are not alike!

We need to personalize our target and develop a profile of our typical unchurched residents.

The more defined your target is the easier it is to reach him.

2. We need to Learn to think like a fish.

The Bible says, “Jesus knew what they were thinking…” Matthew 9:4; 12:25 – Mark 2:8 Luke 5:22; 9:47; 11:17

In Matthew 10:16, Jesus says, “I send you out as sheep in the midst of wolves. Therefore, be wise as serpents and harmless as doves.”

“Be wise in the way you act toward those who are not believers…” Colossians 4:5

The Problem: The longer I am a believer, the less I think like an unbeliever.

“Resistance” is often just poor communication.

If you don’t ask the right questions, you won’t get the right answers.

If you don’t get the right answers, you won’t develop the right strategy.

If you don’t develop the right strategy, you won’t get the right results.

3. We need to Go Where the fish are.

Our target determines our approach.

“When you enter a town and are welcomed, eat what is set before you.” Luke 10:8

“To the Jews I became like a Jew, to win the Jews…In the same way, when working with Gentiles, I live like a Gentile…in order to win the Gentiles. I become all things to all people, that I may save some of them by whatever means are possible.” 1stCorinthians 9:20-22

“Whatever a person is like, I try to find common ground with him so that he will let me tell him about Christ and let Christ save him.” 1st Corinthians 9:22

Jesus’ standard approach: He didn’t have one.

The needs of unbelievers should Determine our outside programs.

“Jesus said, “It is not the healthy who need a doctor, but the sick. I have not come to call the righteous, but sinners.” Mark 2:17
