Fuck Nigga Friday: May is Mental Health Awareness Month so I talked about my journey with mental health in the academy and being trained to be in the top 2% of thinkers in the United States since only 2% of Americans have doctorate degrees. I discuss how this training has shaped my thinking and made me into an intellectual alien of sorts. I also highlight Rosenhan’s article “On Being Sane in Insane Places” and the necessity of understanding people’s social context when thinking about/ conceptualizing their mental wellness and previous to labeling folks as mentally ill or disordered. Also, I applaud the doctors in my life from the University of Maryland, College Park that have invested into my alien way of thinking about my mental health as well as mental wellness who are really dynamic and forward thinkers these folks include but are not limited to: Dr. Catherine Knight Steele (introduced me to black digital studies and black joy as a intellectual field of study) Dr. Patricia Hill Collins (introduced me to Public Sociology and wrote the book “Another Kind of Public Education” and is also a dynamic thinker who wrote “ Black Feminist Thought” and “Black Sexual Politics”), Dr. Rashawn Ray (introduced me to the concept of a sociological self and the many dimensions of the self, he wrote “How Families Matter: Simply Complicated Intersections of Race, Gender, and Work”), Dr. Kris Marsh ( who introduced me to the concept of residential segregation and where I read “American Apartheid,” Kris is brilliant and is the first author on “The Emerging Black Middle Class: Single and Living Alone” she also has taught me that there is a high cost to middle class mobility for black women), Dr. Phillip Cohen (introduced me to social stratification and inequality as being a difference in the amount of something which he talks about on Twitter @familyunequal), Dr. Jeff Lucas (introduced me to group processes and i think he’s still the Associate Dean of Research, Jeff was the first person to push me to apply for external funding for my research and even talked to me when i took my gap year after my 2 years into the program.
