  • S02E06: Hop-On Hop-Off Linguistics Caravan: Snippets of Life as Told in Various Philippine Languages

    In celebration of the National Indigenous Peoples Month in the Philippines, Tuko Chronicles collaborated with the UP Department of Linguistics to compile snippets of different narratives gathered from field research in various ethnolinguistic groups throughout the country. Listen to a sampling of diverse grammatical structures, personal backgrounds, varied ways of life, experiences, and, ultimately, different ways of making sense of reality.

  • S02E04: The Enchanting Cultural History of Tiwtiw in Marinduque
    Tune in to this fourth episode of #TukoChronicles Season 2 as Prof. EJ Bolata muses about the enigmatic tiwtiw, from its original form as an act of using hunting tools or a spell used for hunting to its present meaning as, 'an anting-anting (amulet) used to attract and enchant animals.' Tiwtiw is used in Marinduque to hunt animals or catch fish. However, as Prof. EJ ponders on, tiwtiw may also be used to enchant and seduce humans as well."

    For the first installment of #TukoChronicles Season 2, we proudly give you "The Laji of Batanes," recorded and described by Assistant Professor Edwin Valientes, faculty member of the UP Department of Anthropology and an Ivatan himself. Listen to different samples of laji sung by two known Ivatan singers, Marta Vaso and Carmen Delatado. Let us immerse ourselves in the Ivatan lifeworld as we listen to stories about love and marriage, death and mourning, social drinking, and self-pity and praises. The recording was done in 2003 during Assistant Professor Valientes' fieldwork in Ivana, Batanes.

    In this episode, Profs. Popo Amascual and Malou Morales of the Division of Humanities, University of the Philippines in the Visayas—Tacloban College, comb through and tease out hair in Eastern Visayas and its significance in the community. The discussion focuses on the performers of the hair dance, a contemporary cultural performance in Tacloban City, and the transformation of everyday, intimate practices relating to hair into a spectacle—a performance showcasing their community's identity and collective memory.

    The Kuwaresma or Lenten season is a highly important religious celebration of the Catholic faith. Meditate and reflect this holy season through this special episode of Tuko Chronicles—where we invited several elders to perform the final section of Pabasa, the traditional singing of the Pasiong Mahal. The Pabasa was recorded in April 2022 in San Nicolas, one of the Batangas towns surrounding Taal lake.
