  • Grow: How Demons Bind and God Frees | 1 Timothy 4:1-6

Where are you finding your rest? Ultimatly, it needs to be where God offers it—in the gospel. Seeking it anywhere else leads to bondage. In this message, Pastor Thomas continues his series through 1 Timothy, explaining that the false teachers that Timothy would encounter actually taught the doctrines of demons and where so decieved that they spoke against the truth. Paul points out that they bind people with rules against things that God has called good. As a result, Paul responds that a good minister who is for the gospel would stand against such false teaching. But see the principle—demons bind externally so that they can bind internally, but the truth of the gospel is that we are set free in Christ internally, and should not let deceptive people convince us otherwise. When we find our rest in Christ, we don't need to fight for it from anywhere else. When we find our cleanliness in Christ's blood, we don't need to seek to be clean in any foods or rituals, we are fully clean in him. Where do you find your rest? Look to the gospel—God's grace is sufficient. If God is doing a work through this message or podcast, let us know, and pass it along.

  • Grow: How the Church is the Pillar and Foundation of the Truth | 1 Timothy 3:14-16

Why should the church act according to God's instruction? It seems obvious, but many people fail to realize that the church is God's house, not ours. He is the head, and if we want to show him to the world, we must properly represent him. In this passage, Pastor Thomas Myers preaches from 1 Timothy, where Paul explains why he is writing. Paul writes so the church knows how to conduct itself. He then reveals something powerful - the church is the pillar and foundation (or buttress) of the truth. People need to be able to come to a church where what God thinks is clear, not necessarily what we want him to be. Pastor Myers explains that How we are as a church matters because of Who we are in Christ - the house of the living God. And as that house, as his temple, we are to Hold up the truth of the gospel - the mystery of godliness. Let us know if God uses this message to speak to you.

  • Grow: How to Know Who Can Be Your Deacon | 1 Timothy 3:8-13

The Greek word for deacon means servant. And God calls everyone to be a servant in a certain sense. There we find that there is more blessing in giving than in getting. But in another sense, God has set an office in his church with the same name, an office with a purpose. This deacon office is one that serves God by serving him in such a way that the ministry of the Word, entrusted to the elders, is not neglected. Throughout Acts, growth of the church is used interchangeably with the Word of God growing. And since the one church represents the whole Christ, who both served and taught, both functions need to be in place to fully represent him. In this sermon, Pastor Thomas Myers answers three questions: What is a deacon, what are the qualificaitons of a deacon, and what are the benifits of being a deacon. Let God speak to you as he challenges you to walk like him as a servant.

  • Grow: How to Know Who Can Be Your Pastor | 1 Timothy 3:1-7

Who can be my pastor? This is a question that every church member must take seriously. God gives us a choice: will we sit under someone who tickles our ears and tells us what we want to hear, or someone who speaks God's Word in truth, even if it's hard? In this sermon, Pastor Thomas reviews what the pastorate is, what the qualifications of the pastor are, and two warnings that Paul gives concerning who we place as our pastors. Let God speak to you as he challenges you to walk like him through this message, and through your faithful pastors.

  • Grow: How to Understand "women will be saved through childbearing" | 1 Timothy 2:15

In 1 Timothy 2:15, Paul states, "But women will be saved through childbearing—if they continue in faith, love and holiness with propriety" (NIV). What is Paul doing here? It is tempting to get offended by this passage, but if you listen first, you will see that Paul is actually putting forth a high view of motherhood. Join us as Pastor Thomas walks through this difficult passage and explains that Paul is actually consoling the women of the church, elevating their role, and exhorting them to grow where God has planted them.

  • Grow: How to Understand God's Role for Men and Women in the Church | 1 Timothy 2:8-14

What is God role for men and women in the church? This is a hot topic in the church right now. Pastor Thomas takes this passage seriosly and encourages us to hold those we disagree with with respect. But before we can asnwer that question, we must understand that God has ordered the church to bring us closer to him and if we do not do his will his way we actually distract people from him. From the passage, pastor Thomas demonstrates that our worship can be a distraction when we (1) argue, when we (2) are vain, and when (3) we don't understand the order of God's house. In this order, we find the roles God has set in place for men and women and, here, we can seek to understand 1 Timothy 2:12.

  • Grow: How to Understand Who God is For | 1 Timothy 2:4-8

Is God just for some people or for everyone? The answer to this question was the basis for the Apostle Paul's whole ministry. In this message, pastor Thomas Myers continues his series through 1 Timothy, demonstrating that because God is everyone's God and Christ is everyone's mediator, and there is no other God and no other mediator, what appears to be exclusive to the world is really what it looks like for God to include the whole world for salvation. For Paul, before his conversion to Christianity, he thought salvation was only for the Jewish, but when God converted Paul, he showed him that God is everyone's God, Christ is everyone's mediator, and the gospel is everyone's gospel.

  • Grow: How to Reflect God's Heart as the Church | 1 Timothy 2:1-4

What does God's heart look like? In this episode, Pastor Thomas Myers continues preaching through 1 Timothy. As he opens the second chapter (1 Timothy 2:1-4), he explains how God wants his church to look so it properly reflects his heart. As a church, Pastor Myers explains, God wants his house to be a house of prayer, a house of peace, and a house of salvation. As such, together we show the world who God really is.

  • Grow: How to Fight the Good Fight | 1 Timothy 1:12-20

In this message, Pastor Thomas Myers finishes 1 Timothy 1 and explains that to fight the good fight and avoid shipwrecking your faith, you must attest to the gospel, adore the gospel, and assert the faith of that gospel, holding to it properly. In a world that opposes the truth of God’s Word and has untethered itself from the moral foundation of the Scripture, we can expect people to be offended by what it says. Even so, the Bible is a mirror; it shows us what deep sinners we are and directs us to the grace of God, where we find salvation in Christ alone.

  • Grow: How to Use the Law as a Christian | 1 Timothy 1:5-11

What is the correct use of the law? How does the Gospel interact with it? In this message, Pastor Thomas Myers discusses these questions as he continues in his series through the book of 1 Timothy, Grow. In this sermon, he shows us that the aim of healthy doctrine is love; the correct application of the law is to show us our sins and point us to Christ; and therefore, the answer to the false teachers' use of the law (which they used to show that they were spiritual) was the gospel itself. Here, the sound doctrine of the gospel still uses the law, but not as a tool to become righteous; rather, it shows us how far we have fallen from God's righteous standard.
