Melinda Palacio, an internationally lauded poet, author, and speaker, served as Santa Barbara’s first Chicana Poet Laureate. She was nominated by several community members and recommended to the Council for appointment by the City Arts Advisory Committee. A long-time resident of Santa Barbara, Palacio noted, "Santa Barbara itself is a poem. Santa Barbara is the city that made me a poet." Her journey and the significance of diverse voices in poetry.
