Retired Army Colonel and former Special Operations Forces Commander, COL (Ret.) Lawrence Henry, Ph.D., CBCP. shares his warrior journey, men's health, military service, leadership and conquering colon cancer.
Dr. Lawrence Henry graduated from East Stroudsburg University (ESU) (Pa) where he received his commission as a Military Intelligence Officer and a degree in Speech Communications in 1993. After serving six years as a Military Intelligence Officer, he volunteered for U.S. Army Special Forces Training and earned the coveted Green Beret. For over 20 years,
Dr. Lawrence served in various Command and Staff positions, deployed to South and Central America, Africa, South Korea, and served in combat over 10 times in support of the Global War on Terrorism in Afghanistan, Pakistan, and Iraq.
A survivor of combat-related stage 3c colon cancer, Dr. Lawrence retired in 2020 with 26 years of service at the rank of full Colonel. At the time of his retirement, he was one of six Black Full Colonels who were Special Operations qualified, not in the U.S. Army, but in the Department of Defense.
Dr. Lawrence is the owner and president of Core 90 Network, which focuses on equipping high-performing organizations with strategic solutions for contemporary conflict. He has also led various workshops on Violence Interruption, Executive Leadership, Strategic Planning, and ways to reduce recidivism.
Dr. Lawrence demonstrated his desire to reduce human suffering as a graduate and ambassador of the Morehouse School Of Medicine's (MSM) Online Education and Expanded Program's (OEEP) master's in administration in Justice Involved Care. As a learner as MSM, he illuminated challenges Black women, who were combat veterans, faced reentering society; received leadership and outstanding student awards, and graduated with honors.
Inspired by how they could help others, Dr. Lawrence and a colleague (Thomas Cotton) to start a podcast - Inside Out: Exploring Roads to Redemption - where the two identify barriers that affect the re-entry of returning citizens and realistic and sustainable solutions to reduce the effects of those barriers.
Dr. Lawrence's time at MSM, doctoral studies, military experiences, and the mercy shown to him as he beat a very aggressive form of cancer, coupled with growing up in communities where access to education, employment, and opportunities were scarce, gave birth to the founding of A Bridge 2 Light - www.abridge2light.org - a non-profit primarily focused on disrupting the school to prison pipeline and enabling the re-entry of formerly incarcerated persons into society more transparent and functional manner.
Dr. Lawrence's formal education includes, but is not limited to, the Military Intelligence Basic and Advance Courses, the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Ca, where he earned a Master of Science in Defense Analysis, and the United States Army War College-earning another Master's Degree in Strategic Studies with a certification in National Security Policies. He also earned a Ph.D. in Conflict Analysis and Resolution at Nova Southeastern University, Fort Lauderdale, Fl.
