    An evening devotional with Jonathan Malone and Charley Eastman. This week’s conversation - Christianity and secular holidays.

    Here is the “prayer” that Charley read:

    “Peace has dawned at last, and a war-mad world has furled the blood-red banners that streamed along far-flung lines and lost themselves in the cannon’s smoke. It came with a suddenness that made the most optimistic gasp with the surprise of it. Even now one cannot realize that over yonder men are not dying and pouring out to war a crimson tide. A few short days ago we were reading of the turmoil of war, while today we are planning for the glories and the serenity of peace.”

    An evening devotional with pastors Jonathan Malone and Charley Eastman. Tonight’s discussion: the pilgrimage!

    Here is the poem that Jonathan read as a prayer:

    Opening Stanza of T. S. Eliot's Choruses from the Rock

    o perpetual revolution of configured stars,

    o perpetual recurrence of determined seasons,

    o world of spring and autumn, birth and dying

    The endless cycle of idea and action,

    Endless invention, endless experiment,

    Brings knowledge of motion, but not of stillness;

    Knowledge of speech, but not of silence;

    Knowledge of words, and ignorance of the Word.

    All our knowledge brings us nearer to our ignorance,

    All our ignorance brings us nearer to death,

    But nearness to death no nearer to GOD.

    Where is the Life we have lost in living?

    Where is the wisdom we have lost in knowledge?

    Where is the knowledge we have lost in information?

    The cycles of Heaven in twenty centuries

    Bring us farther from GOD and nearer to the Dust.

    An evening devotional with pastors Jonathan Malone and Charley Eastman. This is part one of a three part series looking into the brand-new, exciting vision statement for Pilgrim Congregational Church (where Charley is a pastor).

    This episode: Growing Faith.

    Here is the prayer that Charley read:

    "A great task demands great faith. To live a great life one needs a great cause to which one can surrender, something divinely large and engrossing for which one can live and if need be, die. A great religious faith will lift one out of narrow grooves and be made an inspired instrument of the universal will of God. Reveal to us the larger goodness and love that speak through the unbending laws of thy world. (Amen)

    An evening devotional with pastors Jonathan Malone and Charley Eastman. Today’s topic - the importance of Christian Education.

    Here are some of the links that Charley mentioned:

    Books by Bob Pazmiño

    Kid’s Bibles

    Marcus Borg:

    Meeting Jesus Again for the First Time

    Reading the Bible Again for the First Time

    Finally, here is the prayer that Jonathan read:

    O my God, I confess that Thou canst enlighten my darkness. I confess that Thou alone canst. I wish my darkness to be enlightened. I do not know whether Thou wilt: but that Thou canst and that I wish, are sufficient reasons for me to ask, what Thou at least hast not forbidden my asking. I hereby promise that by Thy grace which I am asking, I will embrace whatever I at length feel certain is the truth, if ever I come to be certain. And by Thy grace I will guard against all self-deceit which may lead me to take what nature would have, rather than what reason approves.

    An evening devotional with pastors Jonathan Malone and Charley Eastman. Tonight’s conversation: protest!

    Here is the prayer that Jonathan read:

    O Lord, thou art the eternal order of the universe. Our human laws at best are but an approximation of thine immutable law, and if our institutions are to stand, they must rest on justice, for only justice can endure.

    We pray thee for those who amid all the knowledge of our day are still without knowledge; for those who hear not the sighs of the children that toil, nor the sobs of such as are wounded because others have made haste to be rich; for those that struggle vainly against poverty and vice. Arouse them, we beseech thee, from their selfish comfort and grant them the grace of social repentance.
