    Adam Erickson is back as a guest with Jonathan (they really seem to like podcasting together). Today they discuss Matthew 5:1-12 – Beatitudes. Adam is the pastor at the Clackamas United Church of Christ and a writer for The Raven Foundation.

    What does it mean to be blessed? And why is it that God seems to favor those whom society does not view as blessed? Listen to find out!

    If you write a book then you will get on the podcast! Well, not completely, but it helps. Jonathan is joined by Curtis Freeman, the research professor of theology and Baptist studies and director of the Baptist House of Studies at the Divinity School at Duke University. And he has written a number of books.

    For this conversation, Jonathan talks to Curtis about his book Contesting Catholicity: Theology for Other Baptists, which looks at Baptist history for a different vantage point and works to see a different way for many to understand Baptist identity.

    For those of you who are not Baptist, this may get a little in the weeds and may seem a little deep, but stick with it. The questions that Curtis is asking are questions that can be asked from other perspectives and points of view. This is not just for Baptists but offers ways for others to do denominational work from their own context.

    The ways that we do history impact and shape our understandings of who we are and how we are to be. It is important for us to be deliberate and critical about the questions we ask and the ways that we look to answer those questions.

  • Giving Things Meaning

    Word have meaning. Scripture has meaning. But who gives the meaning? Jonathan says he does. Michael is a little more hesitant and humble, but only a little. And hence, a “riliage”

    Michael Strickland is the pastor of the First Baptist Church of Atchison, KS, and joins Jonathan for this time of ranting and spewing esoteric anger. For Michael, words have meaning and it is important that we use words correctly. For Jonathan, good theology should have depth and thought, but he is not really clear what that may look like. A great way to start the new decade.

    What does it mean to have to change your hiking plans? Sometimes, hiking with others can be a blessing, but sometimes the flexibility that is required, the expectations to compromise and conform, can be a challenge.

     Ladies and Gentlemen, the Mountain Goats!

    The Mountain Goats is a band. The Mountain Goats is a person (John Darnielle). The Mountain Goats is an experience, The Mountain Goats is life. Well, maybe not so much the last part, but The Mountain Goats is a band that has had significant impact on millions of people, including one Eric Carlson.

    Eric, the co-host of CutXCut podcast, wanted Jonathan to understand how important and life-changing The Mountain Goats is, so they had a podcast. Spirituality and faith can be found in many different places, including the songs of The Mountain Goats. From Old Testament rage to New Testament love, all can be found in the songs discussed. Below is a list of all the songs that Jonathan and Eric listened to in preparation for this podcast. Not all were discussed on the show but we recommend you check out them all:Black Pear Tree

    Jonathan is joined by the Bishop of the Episcopal Church in Western Louisiana, Jake Owensby to discuss Jake’s book A Resurrection Shaped Life: Dying and Rising on Planet Earth. Make sure to check out Jake’s website.

    Jake Owensby wrote a book! Actually, Jake has written a lot of books, but concerning this episode, Jake wrote a book about living the “resurrection life.” Or to perhaps put it in other terms, a book about living one’s faith seriously.

    It is one thing to say that being a Christian means being a nice person and trying to live with a certain set of values and ideals, but Jake is calling us to look at the center of the Christian faith, the resurrection, and to consider how the resurrection impacts those morals, values, and the very ways that we live. We are not just called to be good people, but to be people who see the world differently, to see the world with a potential for redemption because of the resurrection. It was a great conversation.

    What season is this? What episode is this? The numbering, the ordering has gone all out of whack, so apologies to all those who desire things to be in good order. Just step into the river, into the flow of the Twelve Enough experience!

    Jonathan is joined by Baptist Chaplin, interim pastor Mark Chaffin. Mark is the Interfaith Chaplin at the Baptist Health, Nursing, and Rehabilitation Center in Scotia, New York.

    Mark reached out to Jonathan to talk about an experience that he had in a time of prayer. It was an awareness of the presence of the divine in a different way. So often we try to portray God as a strong, masculine figure, winning at everything and lacking any nuance at all. Mark had an awakening that opened his eyes to the presence of the feminine in the divine. This is not a new thing, but significant. Below are some of the thoughts and resources that Mark wanted to share:

    Words of Lady Wisdom in Proverbs 8:35-36 (this the voice of the co-creator with Yahweh) who warns us:

             “For he (especially the he’s) who finds me finds life

                     and obtains favor of the LORD;

             But he who misses me injures himself;

                     and all who hate me love death.”

    For those seeking ways to integrate the masculine/feminine archetypes as well as honor the divine feminine face of God:

    Mark gives us all a lot of good things to think about and ponder.
