This question gets right to the heart of our work as educators and teachers of writers. We hope our students develop the confidence and skills to engage in hard conversations, especially in this moment when our country is deeply divided and it seems like there are few spaces for people with different perspectives to listen to each other, to think together, and to create. But as teachers, we can create these spaces and use writing as a powerful way to deepen and enrich the conversations. In this episode, we hear from fifth grade teacher Maddie Johnson about how she creates the conditions for civil discourse in her classroom.
