Two And A Half Marks

We go WAY back, to an era of heel Teddy Long, synth intros, no WCW, and Jim Cornette looking exactly the same. This years edition features a loaded card with fights for gold, "baby" Sid and Pillman, and finishes that will make your head spin. We return to the Attitude Era ahead of the Invasion for Judgment Day '01. Overall, pretty fun card: Kane-Trips in a Chain Match, Tag Team Turmoil, and two impressive technical dudes in a 3 Stages of Hell match. And a sad Stone Cold-Taker-McMahon fustercluck main event. Black and Gold NXT just hit. Even here, with the specter of AEW looming. We got the dawn of Heel Io, we have a BANGER between Street Profits and UE, we even got a table spot in a segment! But we know why we're here: The conclusion of Gargano v Cole. Nope, not the one that involved Al Capone. This one featured a worthwhile beginning, a memorable end, and what the hell was the middle. Not even the PER of Cool champ D'Lo Brown could save us from an hour of meaningless content. But hey, we got to see Vince get his ass beat, Goldust be over, and Mankind retaining the WWF Title... sort of. The only thing "extreme" about Extreme Rules 2018 was how long it was. Despite the novelty of having the IC title in the main event, the rest of the card felt lazy. Styles-Rusev was a treat, the B-Team was fun, KO tried to die, but nothing felt genuine. Just a C+ PPV that went an hour too long. Part 1 put guys on base, Part 2 drove them home. WrestleMania 26's main events were STACKED: Streak v Career, Batista v Cena, Jericho v Edge. Technical prowess, incredible feats of strength, fantastic story telling, enormous stakes. Oh, there was also the women's match that was less showcase and more tragicomedy. It's the smelly smell that smells smelly, death of WCW era, but the scent is only just starting to form. Beyond the opening matches, which features the always over Filthy Animals, the surprisingly competent ICP, Kaz Hayashi, and an insensitive gimmick, there's not much to latch on to. The Revolution bust their ass putting over has-beens, Buff screws everyone, and Hogan must be protected. WHO CAN YOU TRUST? What does this era of WWF and 2017 WWE have in common? Passable to great undercard matches with one match that had no business taking place and a main event that underwhelms. Trips and The Dumpster brawled, 1-2-3 Kid was buried with a capital shovel, and the Undertaker stole the show in the main event. Also, Shawn Michaels showed just how HIM he was in 1996.
