In the fall of 1743 (33 years before the birth of the United States of America), somewhere on the stormy, turbulent Atlantic Ocean, a child was born. Thomas and Jane Jemison were blessed with a beautiful baby girl, while aboard the ship, William & Mary.  She would be named Mary and Mary would embark on a separate journey… a voyage, in and of itself, that commenced as soon as their vessel docked in Philadelphia and the Jemison family stepped foot in the New World.

Mary Jemison’s voyage, in many ways, traces the course of colonial and pre-colonial America. Her trials and tribulations, her victories, and her tragedies are shared by the settlers rooted in the colonies during this time. It is an incredible story of survival, an inspirational story of overcoming obstacles and pioneering a life that is both fruitful and fulfilling.
