This week, we watched the third and fourth movies in the Harry Potter series to continue with Harry Potter Holidays. We also caught up with a couple other Christmas classics and some other films that have been on our watchlists. Hannah watched some holiday horrors in Terrifier 3 and the 1974 Black Christmas. She also watched Eyes Wide Shut which falls into the Christmas category loosely. Ailish watched The Santa Clause and gave Wake Up Dead Man a rewatch. The latter was still entertaining, but we still can’t get over the uproarious laughter from the theater when we watched it at the Chicago International Film Festival. Ailish also watched Phantom Thread which, unfortunately, didn’t live up to the hype for her.

Our main watches this week were Harry Potter and The Prisoner of Azkaban and The Goblet of Fire. These films are two of our favorites in the franchise, and for good reason. There’s so much going on in both of these, and the details really make all the difference. It’s been so fun to watch these films in such quick succession because you really notice the changes in quality and the characters. For our holiday pick, we watched National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation. If you haven’t seen this one, we’d be absolutely shocked. This one is a classic and the jokes never stop. We definitely laugh through this episode which is a nice contrast to last week’s heavy episode.

We’re kicking off the holiday season with a Harry Potter marathon! These are books and movies we grew up with, and they always are staples around Christmastime. We also talk a little bit about the Golden Globe nominations, the Warner/Netflix/Paramount deal, the new Zendaya and Robert Pattinson movie “The Drama”, and Hannah’s rewatch of Silver Linings Playbook. Luckily, Hamnet came to a theater near us so we were able to catch a showing. This film moved us both so deeply and we were unbelievably impressed by Jessie Buckley’s performance. Jay Kelly also dropped on Netflix earlier this week, and we couldn’t wait to watch. This one definitely felt very true to the industry experience, and we felt that George Clooney and Adam Sandler gave raw performances. While we heard that this one might not completely be understood by those not in the film industry, we found it to be very relatable as everyone ages and reflects on their life.

This week, we started our Harry Potter marathon and watched The Sorcerer’s Stone and The Chamber of Secrets. Since these are the early films, the CGI isn’t the best, but that’s just a sign of the times. These films are so magical, and we’re excited to watch the rest of them over the next few weeks! We also continued to add our holiday film into the mix and chose The Family Stone this week. We know this one is a little divisive, but we can’t really see why. If you haven’t seen this one in a while and weren’t a fan, it’s definitely time to give it a second chance!

This week kicks off our holiday episodes! Of course we had to add the first four episodes of Stranger Things in there as well since they dropped last week, and we caught up on some other films we logged on Letterboxd. Ailish was able to watch After the Hunt, we continued our conversation from last week when Hannah watched it. It really is easier to discuss this film after you’ve seen it since there are so many plot points, but overall, this one didn’t work for us. Ailish also watched Priscilla, and Hannah watched The Conjuring: Last Rites and Caught Stealing.

Like everyone else, we were excited to watch the first Stranger Things drop over Thanksgiving. The first couple episodes were a little slower, but it definitely picked up in the last two episodes and we can’t wait for the next drop on Christmas! The Roses came to Hulu, so we both added it to our list. While this movie was funny and made us laugh at times, it really dragged and the end was really rushed. It was a cute film, but not one we could see ourselves revisiting. Our first holiday film of the month was A Very Jonas Christmas Movie. We’ve been fans of the Jonas Brothers since they came on the scene and we loved their old show. This film was a great time and we actually had a lot of real laughs throughout. Yes, we’re very biased since we grew up with these guys, but we felt this was one we would revisit next year, or even again this season!

In our final week of Naughty November, we explore Erotic Desires. To start, we talk about some films we watched in the past week. Hannah saw Wicked: For Good. After the Hunt, and Materialists, and Ailish watched Train Dreams. We also discussed some recent trailers that were released and what they made us think of some upcoming releases. 

Erotic Desires week ended up falling a little bit flat which was disappointing to us. We honestly can’t even give a moment for a review for 365 Days because it was so awful. Yes, Covid was going on when this was released, but were we really that desperate? It made Fifty Shades of Grey look really good, which is a real stretch. Fifty Shades is so different from 356 Days given that it was written by a woman, but the movie as a whole isn’t a knock out. The look of the film and the soundtrack is great, and it really does fit in well with the book. Cruel Intentions is iconic. What more is there to say? The cast, the look of the film, and the overall vibe of this really resonates with us. On a completely different note, we unfortunately had Original Sin on this list. With Antonio Banderas and Angelina Jolie in the cast, you would think this one was a no brainer, but it actually fails miserably.

It’s week two of our Naughty November and the theme is Lovers for Hire! Before we review the four films, Hannah shares her thoughts on Warfare, Hell of a Summer, and Gonjiam: Haunted Asylum. Ailish started watching Monster: The Ed Gein Story and plans to give another update when she finishes the series, and we both discuss the Marty Supreme marketing plan.

Our films under the Lovers for Hire theme range from the 80s to just a couple years ago. We started with Lovelace which we were both pretty disappointed by. There was so much potential to really tell a good story, but the focus didn’t seem like it was actually really on Linda Lovelace. What exactly was this film trying to accomplish? Angel is one we’ve heard about many times since it’s one Heather McDonald often references in Juicy Scoop. Yes, it was pretty cheesy and cliché, but it was an entertaining watch. Mini’s First Time pretty much knocked us off our couches. This film took turns we never saw coming and had a cast that would shock you. How had we never heard of this one before now? Finally, we rewatched No Hard Feelings. If you’ve been listening to us for a while, you’ll remember when we saw this one in theaters, and it honestly holds up well on another watch.

This week’s Theater Thursday covers three films we saw at the Chicago International Film Festival. Now that these movies are getting released, we can give more of our thoughts on them and do proper reviews. Spoilers are ahead, so be sure to watch these before listening to this episode! 

Rental Family didn’t pack a huge punch for us, but it was a heartwarming film that is great for a Thanksgiving trip to the theater. Overall, this one felt a little too busy and we felt it would have been stronger and more compelling had it stuck to one main family Brendan Fraser was working with. It Was Just an Accident has gotten a lot of critical acclaim and is a major contender for awards season. This is a deeply personal film for Jafar Panahi which is something very helpful to know going in. Since we tried to go into the films we saw at the festival pretty blind, the political importance and parallels to Panahi’s life were a little lost on us. With that being said, it’s one we hope to revisit in the near future. Sentimental Value is another awards contender. We couldn’t get over the cast chemistry in this one and felt there was so much to explore between family dynamics, personal relationships, and finding your place in the world. Plus, we love a film where the home is a character in and of itself.

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we begin Naughty November with some films about age gap relationships that cross the line. Before we get into the films, we talk some industry news. Last week, it was announced that Jennifer Lawrence and Emma Stone will be making a Miss Piggy movie with Cole Escola writing the script. There are so few details about this that we’re not really sure what to think or how these stars would portray Miss Piggy. We also talk about some of the recent allegations that have been made about Damien Leone on the Terrifier sets, and OUTER DARK which is set to go into production next year and stars Jacob Elordi and Lily-Rose Depp. Hannah also has been catching up with Secret Lives of Mormon Wives and we discuss the future of reality tv. 

Some of the films we cover this week are controversial, but also acclaimed and popular. To start, we discussed Palo Alto which was made before the fall of James Franco. Watching this now, seeing Franco in this role is very unsettling given the allegations that were made against him. The Graduate deals with an age gap affair, but nothing illegal is happening here. The acting here is so good, but we feel the movie lost its emotional tone as it headed into the third act. Lolita (1997) is based on a highly popular novel and the relationship depicted is disturbing to say the least. While we haven’t read the book, it’s our understanding that it’s clear our narrator is unreliable and mentally ill, where that isn’t really clear in this version of the film. Finally, we come to May December. You might remember a previous episode where we discussed this film after it was released and neither of us had seen it since. We were pleasantly surprised on the second watch and love Charles Melton’s portrayal of a young victim now in adulthood.

In this week’s episode of Theater Thursday, we review Die My Love and Frankenstein. If you listened to our previous episodes, you’ll know we saw Frankenstein during our time at the Chicago International Film Festival in October. We were really excited to give this one a second watch and be able to fully review the film! While there seems to be some criticism of this film as a whole, we feel much of it is unfairly based on the fact it’s a Netflix-funded film. One a second viewing, we thought this film looked wonderfully grand and dark. del Toro’s attention to detail and dedication to filmmaking is truly something to behold. Die My Love is another film we were anticipating this year. We didn’t know a lot about this one going in, and thought it was going to be more off-the-rails than it was based on the vibe of the trailer. This film affected us in different ways and really captured the female experience. Robert Pattinson and Jennifer Lawrence have great chemistry which adds to the realness of this film.

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we celebrate the incomparable, Meryl Streep. Watching these films from throughout her career really showcases her range and confirms that she is an actor that only comes around every now and again. Before we dive into our movie reviews, Ailish has some industry news to share, and Hannah gives her thoughts on I Know What You Did Last Summer (2025) and Sorry, Baby.

There are so many films we could have chosen to focus on this week, but we ended up selecting films we mostly haven’t seen before or haven’t recently watched. Sophie’s Choice is the oldest of the bunch and probably Streep’s most notable role. She is such a standout in this film, but we couldn't help but feel like she wasn’t really the main character, as she should have been. Death Becomes Her was a great one to watch coming out of October, and it’s a film that’s had a resurgence in recent years. This one is so campy and fun! August: Osage County received a lot of acclaim when it was released in 2013. While we thought the acting was believable and the story was compelling, it just felt like something was off with this one. Finally, we come to our rewatch of Mamma Mia! It was so enjoyable to watch this one since it had been a while since we’d both seen it, and our fond memories of this film came flooding right back!

This week wraps up our Chicago International Film Festival coverage! We watched all the short films featured in the After Dark category, and discussed our interaction with the people who made PINPOINT come to life. There were six short films in the After Dark category that all focused on different elements of the horror genre. PINPOINT was our favorite and we were able to meet the director, Michael Merlino, and producer, Hannah Ignacio, while we were at the festival. They were wonderful and our only regret is that we weren’t able to watch the film before meeting them! Listen to the full episode to hear our thoughts on the other five short films!

We were also able to see Yorgos Lanthimos’ news film, Bugonia. We had some mixed feelings about this movie, and thought it was really, deeply sad even though comedy was cut throughout. It’s undeniable that Jesse Plemons is giving his all here and completely transforms. Hannah has an interesting perspective that she brings to the table based on some of her lived experience, and Ailish wonders if Yorgos Lanthimos films are for her.
