On this episode of Two Girl Cinema Club, we’re taking a trip across the pond and watching some French films. Before we give our thoughts on those three films, we talk about some industry news that broke this week, and Hannah shares her thoughts upon rewatching Scream and Scary Movie. That also leads us onto a conversation about the coming fall season and our Witch Weekend.

The French are known for their passion, and while we didn’t always see that in a romantic sense in our films this week, all our picks were emotionally heavy. We began with Eyes Without a Face which was released in 1960. We were so impressed with the production value of this and there were multiple, provocative themes being explored throughout. Being in black and white really helped elevate the suspense and eerie look of this as well. Incendies is a 2010 film by Denis Villeneuve that we had never even heard of. These days, we’re so used to him being known for films like Arrival and the Dune series that it’s hard to imagine his beginnings were creating films without a sci-fi lens. Out of the three, this one is the most shocking and overall emotionally draining, but it’s definitely worth your time. Lastly, we have Portrait of a Lady on Fire which is from 2019. This was a film that we had been interested in since its release, but never actually got around to watching. It’s a beautiful period piece that really stays with you long after the film is over. Plus, the costuming and sets/locations are stunning!

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we’re finishing The Twilight Saga and watching a later one of Pattinson’s works. Before we finish that film series, we give our take on the newest film from Jane Schoenbrun, Teenage Sex and Death at Camp Miasma. Hannah has discussed two of Schoenbrun’s previous works in earlier episodes, and this one has been highly discussed since its festival premiere. Both of us had different feelings on this film, but we agree that what Schoenbrun has been able to create has been impressive and incited deeper conversations. We also differed from some other critics/reviews that felt this film was sexually charged since we felt a sense of sadness in the film overall.

To complete The Twilight Saga, we have Breaking Dawn Parts 1 & 2. Unfortunately, these films both feel extremely rushed and the characters even feel extremely different from how they did in the earlier films. Part 1 nearly becomes a full blown body horror with the way Bella’s pregnancy and delivery were handled, and there seem to be a lot of questions left on the table with Bella, Edward, and Jacob. Part 2 does have some redeeming qualities toward the end of the film with the battle sequence, but again, we run into some continuity issues and things that were left unexplained. Overall, we felt that yes, Breaking Dawn was a large book, but if 4 hours of screen time can’t properly depict it in a way that makes sense, maybe some changes needed to be made. We also still can’t seem to understand the decisions made regarding the look of baby Renesmee…After seeing Pattinson in these last two Twilight films, it’s honestly pretty shocking that he was able to have the career he’s had as a serious actor. The Lighthouse is a film from 2019 by Robert Eggers that sees Pattinson and Willem Dafoe slowly descend into madness. With the cast primarily just being the two actors, how far they are able to take their characters is very impressive. The Lighthouse was both a nice palette cleanser after Twilight, and an opportunity to dive deeper into the filmography of Pattinson, while also checking another one of Eggers’ films off our list as we await Werwulf.

Robert Pattinson is always on our mind these days, and fall is starting to creep in. That can only mean that it’s time to rewatch The Twilight Saga. Before talking about the first three films, Ailish gives a brief review of Spider-Man: Brand New Day and we share our thoughts on films that try to appease an audience with a large age range. Breaking news was also announced earlier in the week about a new film from It Ends director, Alexander Ullom, called 4X4: The Event. We’re hoping It Ends comes to a theater near us, but the part that got us excited was Dylan Minnette confirmed he’s returning to the screen. If you have been listening to us for a while, you know we love some Dylan and are big Wallows girls.

We think everyone can agree that anyone who watches any of the Twilight films in present day would be horrified. These films are awful in so many ways, but if you lived through the initial hype of the books and film franchise, you carry a soft spot for them forever.  Twilight is the first installment and its blue tone makes it very jarring to watch. Many of the characters are actually unrecognizable because of the lighting, makeup, wigs, and whatever else was happening on set. Unfortunately, the characters don’t look much better as the films continue. The blue tone is, thankfully, gone in New Moon and Eclipse, but the wigs and inconsistent pale skin are more apparent now than they were in the 2010s. We do love how melodramatic everyone is and can’t resist being a little jealous of Bella for being in such a dream love triangle. We can’t be the only ones who would’ve been fine if these films went in a completely different direction right?

On this episode of Two Girl Cinema Club, we’re taking things back a couple decades and visiting some of the Cohen Brothers’ biggest comedy hits. Before we cover those films, Hannah shares her thoughts of Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 since she recently watched it, and the potential for Five Nights 3. There was also some recent industry news that we felt was worth covering like the broken deals for Barbie 2 and the stand-alone star power of some of the biggest movie stars of 2026.

Covering some of the Cohen Brothers’ films took care of some of our blind spots. We start with Fargo which is really propelled by its great acting, script, and location. In a way, the snowy landscape of Minnesota is one of the main characters. The Big Lebowski comes a couple years later and is really in the same vein. John Goodman stood out to us here and we laughed harder thinking about some of the scenes than we did on our first watches. For both of these films, we feel our love for them will only continue to grow as we rewatch them through the years. Burn After Reading is the most recent of this group and it stars Brad Pitt and George Clooney showing off their comedic side. This one was also funny and well done, but didn’t hot as hard as the first two.

In honor of Spider-Man: Brand New Day, we’re reviewing the three iterations of Spider-Man we’ve had through the decades. Unfortunately, we haven’t been able to catch the newest film yet, but we plan on doing that soon. Watch out for that Theater Thursday episode! We didn’t watch any other films this week, but we do have some time to discuss the new trailer for Wicker. This trailer has really taken over social media and we are loving the hype. Give us more naughty Alexander Skarsgard! 

In 2002, we were given Tobey Maguire as the original Spider-Man. This definitely looks and feels like it’s from the early 2000s, but honestly, the graphics don’t look horrible. Maguire and Kirsten Dunst have good chemistry here and the jokes land pretty well. Yes, we probably feel a sense of nostalgia with this one, but it’s far and away better than the reboot that came 10 years later. Unfortunately, Andrew Garfield as The Amazing Spider-Man doesn’t leave us very much to talk about. This was unsuccessful to us from top to bottom. From the CGI, the script, the chemistry, and the tone, this one was a hard watch. Just five years later in 2017, Tom Holland comes on the scene in Spider-Man: Homecoming. We both agree that Holland does the best as the character and that this version of the movie franchise is the most entertaining. It looks good, Holland seems to really fit into the role, and the whole thing actually feels pretty real (or as real as it can be). This was also a prime time for the MCU and it was cool to see how the Avengers were woven in.

We can’t get enough of the long-form, historical epics after watching The Odyssey, so we decided to add a couple to the list for this week. Before we dive into our reviews, we discuss some recent trailers (The Thomas Crown Affair and Ebenezer) and Hannah gives her review of Undertone which leads us into a conversation about the environment in which you watch horror films. 

Even though we only watched two films this week, the total runtime was 5 hours and 15 minutes. Ben-Hur is a film that we’ve all seen stills or clips from, but probably haven’t seen. One of the most shocking things about this film is that it’s from 1959 and still beats out some newer films of our time that utilize technology. While this was very long, the story was pretty interesting, we both felt engaged, and the acting conveys true emotion. The chariot race scene absolutely didn’t disappoint and the practical effects and sets are very impressive. Comparatively, Troy falls flat for us. Yes, Eric Bana, Brad Pitt, and Diane Kruger are pleasant to look at for nearly 3 hours, their acting left us disappointed. This film felt like it was from the early 2000s and, unfortunately, doesn’t really hold up when compared to other historical epics. We also draw comparisons and similarities to The Odyssey.

This week, we have two reviews of some recent films for Theater Thursday. The Shadow of the Sun is a smaller film by Miguel Angel Ferrer about two brothers who use their voices in different ways to break free of the struggles they’re facing in their Venezuelan town. Leo is a man facing financial troubles and abandoned passions. His younger brother, Alex, is a deaf young man who has a gift for songwriting but often gets bullied because of his disability. Alex convinces Leo to perform a song he wrote and enter a local competition with a large cash prize that would change their lives. We discuss Ferrer’s inspirations, the importance of inclusion in film, and the various symbolism and themes reflected here. It was also announced that Ferrer’s new horror film is in production which was a surprising bit of news! The Shadow of the Sun is available to stream on Apple, Amazon, Fandango, and Google on August 4.

We briefly touched on The Invite last week, but Ailish hadn’t watched it yet, so we’re giving it a full review here. This film was fresh-feeling and had us laughing out loud and getting deep in our feels. Norton, Cruz, Wilde, and Rogan have amazing chemistry and are feeding off each other the entire time. While this film was portrayed as a sexually charged comedy, there is much more revealed as the plot develops. Compared to Wilde’s last directorial venture, Don’t Worry Darling, this is miles ahead. There were a few things of note, but overall, they are small critiques and this is definitely something to catch before it leaves theaters.

We’re back from summer break and finally talking about The Odyssey! We saw this last weekend, like so many others, and our expectations were met. It was so unbelievable to watch such a feat of epic filmmaking come alive on screen, and hearing the behind the scenes interviews have made the film even more impressive. This is absolutely a film that will stand the test of time! We hope to see this in IMAX at some point and we know this is going to be a big awards contender, so this definitely won’t be the last time we speak on it. Hannah also watched all of the Evil Dead films in preparation for Evil Dead Burn and gives her thoughts on them all, while Ailish talks about some films she watched on the plane, including Hoppers and The Christophers.

For our theme this week, we focused on films that are based on true crime or interpretive of true crime. Dead Man’s Wire is a film we’ve talked about before and one we really loved from the Chicago International Film Festival last year. On a rewatch, this one still held up for us, but nothing could compare to seeing it in person that first time. Gus Van Sant does take some creative liberties, but Dead Man’s Wire is still based on the real events that transpired in Indianapolis with Tony Kiritsis and Meridian Mortgage. The Voice of Hind Rajab highlights some of the horrors that were taking place in the height of the turmoil in Gaza in 2024. This film is unique because it mixes the actual recorded audio and footage with the actor’s portrayal which makes for an even more emotional watch. It also shows the battle between making decisions based on emotion versus making decisions based on experience. Schindler’s List is another tough watch. This film tackles an extremely difficult subject matter, but somehow still captivates you as a viewer. It’s based on the true story of Oskar Schindler, but Spielberg changed some things for the film. Hannah was also able to watch Gone Girl, and Ailish watched Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood. Both of these are loosely based on crime and take a “what if…” approach. Gone Girl has parallels to the Laci Peterson case and imagines a world where Laci flipped the script on Scott. Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood has the Manson Family woven in and depicts a scenario where the group never makes it to Sharon Tate’s home.

This week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we’re talking about our favorite films of the year so far. We have a lot of overlap here, but a couple are unique to each of our lists. Funnily enough, our top three were the same! We also discuss some of our most anticipated films for the rest of 2026. There are many that we hope to see at upcoming film festivals and others that we don’t have much info about yet. What are some of your favorite films of the year and which ones are you looking forward to seeing? Be sure to share your picks with us! 

We were also able to see a screener of an upcoming film called Middle Life. This will receive a limited release at the middle of the month, and hopefully a larger release after that! Middle Life is a heartwarming story of two people who are brought together by unique circumstances and develop a friendship while navigating different struggles in their life. We don’t want to give too much away, but you can listen to more of our review in the episode!

After reviewing Disclosure Day last week on Two Girl Cinema Club, we needed validation that Spielberg really is a visionary. Before we dive in, we discuss some industry news, give a full review of Toy Story 5 since Ailish was able to watch it, and Hannah recaps House of Wax. We do go on a bit of a tangent about how films look different these days compared to years ago, so just be prepared for that!

In previous episodes, we have watched other Spielberg films and were impressed by their plot, direction, and production. After watching Disclosure Day, we felt it was time for us to watch some more of his sci-fi films to see how they compare. A.I. Artificial Intelligence is about an AI bot designed as a child goes on a journey to become a real boy to gain the love of his mom. The premise might sound a little cheesy, but it actually becomes quite emotional with the performance of Haley Joel Osment. We also get a side plot with Jude Law as AI Gigolo Joe and humans rebelling against the existence of AI bots in their world. We thought the CGI looked great in this and the world of Gigolo Joe was bright and exciting. Minority Report is a film we had heard a lot about, but had never seen. This is an A1 performance by Tom Cruise and Spielberg is also firing on all cylinders. There are a lot of things happening in this film, so you really have to pay attention and it’s definitely worthy of a rewatch soon. Again, we were very impressed by the CGI here! Finally, we rewatched Catch Me If You Can. This is a classic young Leo film and the story is engaging even after multiple watches. We can also really see the parallels between this and Marty Supreme, even though the overall tone is different.
