Celebrating our ancestors: the things we wish we could ask those that have now gone.

Two Natural Ladies share stories from their past. Vicki discusses Uncle John’s Organ and her husband Shane who showed interest in learning keyboards. In retrospect Vicki could have connected Shane and Uncle John with their common interest. 

And Vicki’s beloved garden! As a child her mum and grandma would walk in the garden and discuss the flowers. At the time it seemed so boring, but now Vicki would love to be able to ask questions about the plants in her garden – what’s edible. 

Jo’s husband Frank, loves to wander in the gardens of friends and family and find edible plants. Two Natural Ladies mention their enthusiasm for edible garden and edible nature strips and leaving plants that may seem like weeds but attract the bees.

Jo talks about her special times with her Nana. Stringing the beans in the kitchen and putting cream on her feet before bed are two of Jo’s favourite memories. There was always a sense of calm around her Nana.

And a confession from Jo – the worm farm has been a complete failure and the worms are no moreL. Vicki is traumatised and feels she may need to take the rest of the day off and leave Jo to a solo career.

Two Natural Ladies interview Rosie Bouton from WePlan Financial who offers a unique service for families and the elderly dealing with the minefield of ageing and ‘what’s next’.

Rosie worked for Services Australia (CentreLink) for 13 years and during that time worked predominately with carers looking after a family member. These carers give up a lot to look after a loved one keeping them safe and with dignity

Vicki and Jo discover Rosie’s passion. She could see some cracks in the system and so she started her own business We Plan to support people trying to navigate the aged care system.  It is difficult and daunting for everyone involved. And it is such an emotional time.

Rosie’s procedure when someone ask for help is:

· 5-10 minute chat about what’s going on

· A longer session collecting more information

· A strategy document – with options and guidance

· Ideally Rosie wants to speak with the elderly person but often due to circumstances it is the families

Two Natural Ladies learn that Rosie does need comprehensive information about the elderly persons finances as the system is means tested

Ideally people would plan for their future care needs which means that things are not rushed. But unfortunately people tend to leave it till that critical time. None of us want to end up in “one of those places”

Jo shares some of the things that her and her parents are going through at this time and how lucky she is that her parents are forward thinking. Rosie reiterates it is better to plan as it gives the elderly the control

Once Rosie is engaged by the family she can assist with all aspects of what’s next. AND give people the choice – “Choose Your own Adventure’! (Retirement village, Stay at home, Aged care facility, Granny Flat in the back yard) This takes that stress away from dealing with lawyers, all the paper work etc - Rosie helps with the gambit of logistics

Understanding the Government system puts Rosie in a unique position. She doesn’t charge for her initial hour and will never let someone struggle no matter what their financial situation.

Advanced care planning and putting the decisions of future medical planning into the hands of the elderly is her aim. Rosie shares a wonderful story about a Vietnam vet where she was able to give him what he wanted – to stay at home. She saved the family $1,000’s as well!

Financial benefit a lot of loop holes with this systems complex and specialist area – will save you financially.

Rosie’s commitment is to keep the power in the hands of the client and assist them in their choices.

Two Natural ladies discuss some of the everyday struggles we all face. Anxiety, depression, fear and isolation – and for those who can no longer go on do they realise the affect this will have on their families and friends forever?  

Although at the time when things seem darkest – ‘This too shall pass’. We just need to find a way to put one step in front of the other – as Deborah Pascoe says find one thing that lights you up/makes you feel good. 

There are always people around and when we are at our worst we can’t see them. Participating makes a difference. Jo shares how when she was at her lowest, it was her time with Vicki, just being, that was a relief from her suffering. 

And yet when we are at our worst we  shy away from people – counter intuitive!  “Marriage is hard, Divorce is hard - Life can be hard –so choose your hard” And though we are alone we are all in this together. 

Without the dark there is no light.  Change is a constant... that's for sure.

Covid has reined in our obsession with unattainable beauty standards”

Two Natural Ladies have both experienced the benefits of Intermittent Fasting. A process that has been recommended by certain health experts for over sixty years.

Jo shares her discovery of Justin Nault and the information he gives about fasting. Justin talks about:

Apoptosis is a process that occurs when a cell intentionally “decides” to die. In humans, apoptosis plays a major role in preventing cancer by causing cells with damaged DNA to commit “suicide” before they can become cancerous. ...

Insulin creates weight gain. Fasting reduces insulin.

Vicki talks about her health issues many years ago and how fruit fasting worked for her. She lost weight and had heaps more energy – it worked for her. She did have to deal with other people’s opinions and after a time stopped sharing what she was doing with most people.

The discussion continues, with talk about a leading fasting expert Dr Alan Goldhammer, who advocates fasting to assist us to live healthier lives.

Give our digestion a break, help with inflammation. Craving processed food is out new normal. We no longer crave fruit. But after fasting for a short period of time our taste buds love fruit again.

Jo & Vicki also touch on the foods advertised for children as healthy for them to eat. Only 10%  of the content has any nutritional value!

Two Natural Ladies wish everyone a Happy 2021 (9 months late!). Jo & Vicki question: When do we stop saying “Happy New Year? And when do the Christmas decorations get put away? – never according to Vicki!

Once the holiday season is over it can be difficult for us to get back into work mode. Vicki and Jo discuss ways to ease into work to make it easier. We can resent being back.

Two Natural Ladies discuss their yearly holidays away from the kids, a free trip given by the company they worked with as an incentive. A time to think and explore without the constant interruptions from four children. Then the shock of going back home, after being pampered, to the constant demands. Resenting the kids, resenting being back into the everyday.

Resenting washing the dishes. Why are there always more? Trying to get the sink ‘up to date’ And everyone feels they are doing their share. Vicki & Jo talk about the waste of emotions, feeling this resentment and resenting feeling resentful.

Take a moment to breath; sit with things and don’t react. We can interpret things incorrectly and create bigger dramas. Jo & Vicki find stepping back, using their gut, their intuition often stops issues increasing.

The social dilemma: we won’t be happy till we have the next thing

2021 has begun and the Two Natural Ladies discuss decluttering

Oh dear, Vicki has a problem letting go of her past clutter. Jo offers to help but worries this could be the end of a beautiful friendship.

Pledging to declutter a certain area, or one box a day can be helpful – making a commitment to others to get it done.

Apparently the average household has around 300,000 items – we all have our own Op shops we can find things to reuse.

During lockdown we did declutter but many of us also spent a lot on line and bought more ‘stuff”

Jo & Vicki also talk about the wonderful act of paying it forward and giving away what we no longer need or use.

Things are hard – ‘choose your hard’. Whether you have four kids at home, home schooling, or you are isolated and on your own, there are challenges. Two Natural Ladies discuss finding things to be grateful for: Christmas Day is only one day and it can be tough.

Jo shares her Christmas with her family now and as a child: Growing up she had a traditional English Christmas with hot food on a hot day! Noisy at lunch and quiet and musical at night. No longer traditional, Secret, Kris Kringle with prawns, seafood, salads and Lebanese food.

Vicki then shares her childhood with just the four of them. Her Mum would surprise and delight them with lots of presents. A quiet day at home.

Christmas Eve traditions are discussed including reading ‘The Night Before Christmas’ and kids sleeping in the same room (even as adults).

Jo & Vicki discuss how as mums we compare ourselves with others. As mums we often look at other mums and think they are doing a better job. We are always trying to do it ‘right’. Whether its discipline, education, keeping the house tidy, playing with the kids, we are forever doubting ourselves and thinking others have it handled.

Two Natural Ladies talk about the lack of a manual for each child – why isn’t there one? Navigating how to do all the millions of things we need to do as parents throughout a child’s life and try and do it right. We are only human!

Trying to have a date night and falling asleep!

Vicki & Jo continue with this discussion of doing it right and then BAM, our darlings reach an age and now hate us! It certainly takes resilience to be a parent!

Working out which battles to fight and remembering we are not raising perfect humans, like their Mums and Dads, they are flawed.

And then when you feel you can take no more – ‘The perfect moment “happens. The children are all playing and laughing and having such fun - It’s like a postcard and we want to hold onto it but it quickly slips through our fingers and a fight ensues, or someone gets upset and the moment is gone.

Parenting is certainly not for the feint hearted – but is also filled with many joyful and funny moments – one of which Vicki shares about briefly at the end (haha)
