"Fernando took off his glasses and massaged his eyes. He couldn't believe he was going through such a ridiculous thing. He'd heard of situations like that before, but they were always someone else's anecdotes. Not his. He'd been so careful with all of them, just to avoid all that drama".
The nice thing about being a writer is how people react when they find out about our profession. They immediately dedicate themselves to giving us material. “This happened to me and I think it could be useful for one of your stories”. That was the case with Eleni's therapist. He told her he had a patient who had recently confessed she was in love with him. When Eleni asked him how common such situations were, he surprised her with a “very common”. Sometimes, loneliness or bad experiences play tricks on people and confuse them.
With her therapist’s permission, Eleni wrote this story months ago in just a few days and she had to confess: the entire process was a lot of fun.

ABOUT TWO SOUTHERN CORNERS
We are Nelly Sarpong from West Africa and Eleni Noah from South America.
The idea for Two Southern Corners was born a year ago after we met and became friends at a dinner party. We instantly connected thanks to our common passion for writing.
After Covid hit the world, and we all had to quarantine, we started talking about how we could write consistently. Then the idea of having readers (like you) lit up like a bulb. The thought of you, eager and waiting every week for one of our stories, inspired us. So, you, our dear reader, are the heart of this site. If it weren’t for you, none of these short stories would exist.
The name of our site is pretty simple yet interesting. Paraguay and Ghana are both in the southern part of the world and on almost exactly opposite sides. Also, even though Latinos and Africans live so far away, we found out we have so much in common; never-ending summers, bright personalities, vibrant cultures, and even similar ways of thinking. That’s the spirit behind the name Two Southern Corners.
" Darius, the poor boy from a lightless village who had a goal to achieve the American dream, was now a man who had been wrongfully convicted"
“At what cost” was inspired by an acquitted death row inmate. I knew I had to write this story at all costs. I was so eager to finish this story, I wrote it in a day. That is how much I wanted to bring this to you. I really hope this story tugs at your heartstrings.

"The itching of my belly button doesn’t decrease, on the contrary, it gets worse with time. A tiny unnoticed crack and then; out of nowhere, pus, swelling, and that damned desire to rub myself against a tree".
Two years ago, Eleni Noah published this very first story on Two Southern Corners. She wrote it almost a decade again, while working at an advertising agency. Eleni poured out in it all her frustrations and uncertainties about the future. She wanted so many things, but felt she was trapped in that place with no sight or chance to get out. This wasn’t, of course, the end of her own story, and Yellow Polished proved to be a wonderful therapy.

"One thing I knew for sure was that we were all bonded by the prospect of a better life".

“At least 130 feared dead after migrant dinghy capsizes in the Mediterranean”. This was the headline that inspired me to write “Evanesce”. Who were these people? Are some still lying in the sea waiting to be saved? Do their families know? Will their families ever know? What were their last thoughts? Did they regret making the journey? Were they proud of themselves for making the risky decision? Will they be remembered? How would they want to be remembered? I didn't have the answers but I had a story to tell.
You can read more about this in my article: "The Headline that inspired Evanesce".

"I was on holiday! So this is what they meant by a hospital fetish".
I (Nelly) wrote this story on mother’s day. They do so many things, and usually all we know about them is that they are our mothers. We forget this person has a name apart from mummy or mama. She was once a girl. She has cobwebs in her past, or maybe she doesn’t. But there is a history, her story.

"He was no longer angry, but he would have preferred to be because what had settled inside him and wouldn't go away was even worse".
Eleni Noah has a notebook where she jots down loose ideas that catch her attention and have the potential of a story. That’s where she found the line “a rancher who cries when no one sees him because he feels lonely”.
She remembers writing it down after hearing the anecdote from a friend. His brother, a rancher, had confessed he felt very lonely after a round of beers. Eleni and her friend laughed about it, not in mockery but because of the peculiar picture. Then they both reflected on the power of loneliness to break people’s pride. And also how important and precious was it to have someone to share life with. You couldn’t buy it with all the gold in the world.

"They watched movies on her couch and ate dinner on his. Laughter gave way to hugs. Hugs to kisses and whatever came after".
Eleni Noah wrote this story after seeing a man and a woman chatting on a balcony. Each on their own side of the divider, they seemed to be telling each other confidences while smiling and drinking coffee. In Berlin, where one hardly ever converses with neighbours, she found it interesting that they had gone beyond the polite “morgen” (good morning) to get to know each other and enjoy such trust.

"“Give me the damn phone!!” I screamed as I snatched it from his hands. Vernon was calling again."

This story was born out of empathy during the beginning of the coronavirus. I wondered what was happening in the lives of other people. Cobwebs that had been hiding in wardrobes for ages were finally being exposed. For many, staying at home had resulted in finding out the true colours of the people with whom you have been living under the same roof. Read more about this here: Finding Out A Loved One's True Colours
