  • Episode 3. Try This Exercise to Let Go of Negative Energy
    3. Try This Exercise to Let Go of Negative Energy
    Tianna Tye

Hello my friend, in this episode of TyePod, we’re getting deep and we’re being intentional about letting go of negative energy. I’ll be sharing a quick 10 minute exercise that I learned to help cleanse negative energy, specifically as it relates to your experience with another person. Truthfully, this is one vulnerable conversation. But, I have made the decision that if this helps just one other person, then I’ll be happy that I shared. Y’all, I’ve got some trepidation about this one! THIS IS SCARY, but my spirit feels content… so let’s talk about it.

    Negative Energy, Is it Real?

Let me start this off by saying, energy is REAL. Okay? I don’t care what you call it. A feeling in the atmosphere, a force, a spirit, a presence. It’s all related. It’s all energy. Like, you know that feeling when you enter the room and someone you maybe don’t like, or you’re currently in a fight with someone who is there? The air is thick, you maybe start feeling anxious, and you want to put as much space between yourself and them as possible? That’s what I’m talking about when I say energy is real.

    Energy and Relationships

Let’s be real with each other. There’s good energy and there’s bad energy. And you know the interesting thing about human beings? We remember the BAD ENERGY SO MUCH MORE. Negative emotions linger with us and weigh us down. Once I took a Positive Psychology course that outlined the scary truth: human beings remember negative experiences more accurately than positive experiences.

A lot of people don’t understand why, especially when we aim to be so positive. But consider this:

You’re in an unfamiliar territory and you hear a noise you’ve never heard before. Your friend who’s walking with you urges you to ignore the noise. It gets louder and louder and you press forward to try to see where it’s coming from. Suddenly, you hear a scream come from behind you. You turn just in time to see your friend fall to the ground. A snake slithers away from their unconscious body. That’s when you see it, the tail of the snake, shaking like a rattle. The noise you heard earlier.

I bet you money, after an experience like that, you’ll never forget what a rattle snake sounds like again. DARK example I know. But that’s exactly why we remember negative experiences more. It’s a protective instinct. It helps us avoid pain.

When it comes to relationships, this little piece of human nature is problematic. Like for real. And I’ve come to believe, that if there is negative energy between you and another person you need to clear it. Whether your relationship with that person continues or not, it is in the best interest of your SOUL to clear that energy.

    An Activity by Adyashanti

I learned this incredibly simple, incredibly fantastic exercise from a spiritual teacher, thought leader and author named Adyashanti. Here are the bones of the exercise. It’s really so simple that it may seem silly.

    Materials:

    • 2 chairs

    • An open mind

    • An intentional heart.

    Steps:

    1. Set two chairs next to each other.

    2. Take a seat in one chair. And when you sit down in the chair, be prepared to let yourself feel the negative energy, Adyashanti uses the example of anger.

    3. Once you feel nice and angry, imagine “who is this emotion attached to”

    4. Sit in that and just let whatever thoughts, emotions, whatever let them happen. For a few minutes.

    5. Do not assign the face the blame. (i’ll explain this more later)

    6. Acknowledge the energy and when you’re ready, decide that it’s time to let it go.

    7. Move to the second chair.

That’s it! A 5-10 minute activity, and it changed a big part of my life. So I wanted to share it with you! Now I know, this may seem kind of fru-fru kind of light and like where’s the proof. Tune in to this episode of the podcast to learn what I experienced when I did this activity! Spoiler alert: it was INTENSE.
