Okay, maybe the title of this episode doesn't quite do the topic justice (but I spent way too much brainpower coming up with it, so we're just going to leave it as is). Birth rates around the world aren't just falling, they're crashing through the floor and drilling into the deepest depths you can imagine. So the obvious question is: why is that? Well, without giving too much away, let's just say the world is becoming a more inhospitable place. Life keeps getting more expensive and our environments are becoming more hazardous and it all seems to get worse with each passing year. For the average person, that creates a difficult choice. Starting a family becomes something that they may delay or skip altogether, choosing instead to invest their time and money in other parts of their lives: their hobbies, careers, travel, or whatever else brings them fulfillment. Then of course, some people don't have children because of heartbreaking circumstances that are beyond their control, and my condolences go out to them. But for many others, the reason is simple: they just don't want kids. They have no desire to become parents, and that's entirely their choice. It's their right to not give a fuck if they don't want to. Now if only a small percentage of people make that decision, nobody really bats an eye. If that percentage grows, maybe a few people start to sweat. But when enough people make that choice that the fertility rate falls well below replacement level, well, that's when a nation's leaders start sounding the alarm. That's when governments start dangling some bait on the hook, offering tax breaks, baby bonuses, and other incentives meant to lure people into having children. But more and more people are looking at the numbers, doing the math, and deciding the deal still isn't worth it. So what happens if those incentives stop working? What happens when the nations that are facing a demographic collapse decide that they've had enough of asking nicely? On this episode, we'll explore the global decline in birth rates, the arguments from every side of the debate, and the unsettling possibility of what the "nuclear option" might look like: a future that feels less like policy and more like neo-noir fiction, all red dresses and white bonnets.
