Now a little bit of water isn't the end of the world, but it's never just "a little bit of water."

It starts off that way, just a few drops, but that causes the initial leak to grow, and starts to cause water damage underneath, and before you know it you've installed a waterslide from the ceiling, and there's no way to turn it off.

The only way to prevent it, and maximize your roof's lifespan, is to take care of all the little problems as they pop up, before they can start collecting water and turning into massive complications.

I'm not the type to tell you about a problem without offering a solution, and this time it's an easy one. It's even a cost-effective one, because while this could cost a little, it can save you a ton in the long run.

All you need to do, and I can't stress this enough, all you need to do, is call an expert to check it out. Regularly.

Depending on the age of your roof, your local climate, and how large your roof span is, you should probably get at least two professional inspections per year. I would also recommend calling for extra inspections after serious weather, because major storms, blizzards, or extreme winds can easily cause damage you might not be able to see from the ground.

How about a bit of extra safety for your roof, without any extra cost? While I don't recommend trying to fix it yourself, one thing you can do is extra inspections, especially after a storm.

However, to be perfectly clear, self-inspections do not replace expert inspections.

Checking out your roof yourself is great, and it's something you should do every time there's a storm, but it's not the same as hiring an expert to do a thorough check of everything. If you try to do all the inspections yourself, it could cost a lot more than it saves.

My recommendation is simple, call the experts, and while they're taking a look at your roof, ask them what early warning signs you can watch out for, and how to check for obvious signs of water damage. Having two sets of eyes on your roof can only help to catch any problems sooner, and the sooner you catch them, the less they usually cost to repair.
