Conquered in 1760 and abandoned by France in 1763, the Province of Quebec entered the British Empire, and Canadiens became subjects of George III alongside their longstanding enemy, Britain's American colonists. Over the next decade, Quebec would adjust itself to a new role on a transformed continent but assessing the relationship between the new province and its British American neighbors is complicated by the silence of the existing historiography.

In this presentation, Dr Gabriele Ferrario explores the evidence related to the study and practice of alchemy in Medieval Jewish societies, focussing in particular on the relationship between theory and practice as portrayed in the fragments found in the Cairo Genizah.

Dr Nadia Vidro’s talk looks at the relationship between scientific calendar monographs and the actual calendars tables found in medieval Jewish manuscripts and tries to understand why calendar treatises had limited influence on the spread of popular calendars incompatible with the standard calculation.

Particularly for areas of medieval Jewish settlement that did not produce extant archives, the rabbinic literature from those regions can shed important light on practices and values of the laity. This presentation compares and contrasts levels of religious observance in northern Europe (Ashkenaz) with those of Spain, as reflected in the distinctive halakhic formulations of the rabbinic authorities.

Prof. Ephraim Kanarfogel is the E. Billi Ivry University Professor of Jewish History, Literature and Law at Yeshiva University in New York. A leading authority in the fields of medieval Jewish intellectual history and rabbinic literature, he is the author of six books and more than seventy articles, and is Secretary of the American Academy for Jewish Research.

In the lecture I discuss what we can learn about the scientific level and practice of medieval Jews through the introductions by Abraham bar Hiyya/Hayya to two of his scientific treatises on mathematics and astronomy. I also claim that the calendrical algorithms in Jacob bar Samson's treatise on the Jewish calendar strongly hint at the use of mental mathematics rather than a theoretical, abstract perception of the subject.

Shortly after the 1964 Civil Rights Act, Daniel Patrick Moynihan authored a government report titled The Negro Family: A Case for National Action that captured the attention of President Lyndon Johnson. The report's central argument that poor families headed by single mothers inhibited African American progress touched off a heated controversy. The long-running dispute over Moynihan's conclusions changed how Americans talk about race, the family, and poverty.

Civil war scenarios with one rebel group fighting the government have become rare. Instead, we encounter situations with multiple violent non-state groups whose economic and political motivations are blurred as well as changing over time. Exposed to a decade-old armed conflict and geo-strategic for the global cocaine business, Colombia’s borderlands are paradigmatic for this convergence of conflict and crime.

The American Civil War, Thomas D'Arcy McGee declared in 1864, is 'a true continental crisis; it is a Canadian crisis as well as a Republican crisis, and we can no more escape from its consequences than we can throw up a Chinese wall of exclusion instead of the existing boundary lines'. This paper examines the influence of the American Civil War on the creation of the Canadian Confederation, with particular reference to two historiographical schools of thought.
